BLACKBALL NOTES

The Blackball Caledonian Society’s Pipe Band and various local vqcpl artists, including Miss M. Watson (Brunnerton) journeyed to Waiuta cm Friday afternoon to participate in a concert programme in the gold-mining township. Several parents and friends including Mr Robert Clark (Chief of the local Caledonian Society) also accompanied the party. The members of the Pipe Band were tendered an invitation to attend the sports at Blackwater on Saturday, but owing to having an engagement to fulfil at Paroa, had to reluctantly decline the offer. On arriving home from Paroa by the late train on Saturday, the members of the Band rendered selections en route, to headquarters, and have signified their willingness to assist in the local picnic outing to Hokitika, and also to visit the Brunner sports. Mr C. White, who recently underwent an operation at the Grey Hospital for throat trouble, returned home to Blackball on Saturday. Mi’ and Mrs Jas Hey returned to Blackball on Saturday after a holiday visit to the Auckland district. Mr and Mrs Jas Turk, and Mr Cyril Turk, of Karamea, are on a week-end visit to Blackball. (

The local Quoits Tournament was brought to a finality on Saturday, the winner of the Miniature Silver’ Cun (inscribed “Quoits Championship 1929) and 30/- prize money being Mr Robt. Leitch; second (15/-), Mr W. McDougall; third, (9/-) Mr S. Symons; fourth, Mr A. Moore. The local Picnic Committee held their final meeting prior to the excursion to Hokitika on Friday 15th inst., it bping ultimately decided to allocate 1/. each and free railway ticksts to all children between the ages of one year to 15 years. A varied sports programme, comprising 29 events should provide a good afternoon’s entertainment. Should funds allow, each competitor in the juvenile events (10 in number) will be presented with a silver coin, whether successful or otherwise.
