COBDEN NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent.) The local roadman has almost completed the repairs to the main thoroughfare and before the winter sets in it is to be hoped that the side streets will receive the same attention. Our local school ground has a much improved appearance, the laying down of a considerable area of asphalt making the ground much neater. Both scholars and teachers must appreciate the improved conditions and a little further effort should make the school surroundings really attractive. Of course the unsightly creek is an eyesore, but this is a work beyond local effort and an endeavour should be made to get the Department to take up the matter. The forthcoming Fire Brigade Competitions at Hokitika are causing a stir among local firemen. Teams for the various events are practising early and late and are putting up some fast times. They may be relied on to bring credit to the township. A rather severe form of whooping cough is prevalent in the district at present affecting mainly the younger children.
