CLERK’S THEFT.

TAUMARUNUI, January 25.

Charles James, formerly clerk in the Public Works Department, Ohura, appeared on remand before Justices, on a charge of theft of Government money totalling £251/8/6. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence at Hamilton. Bail was fixed at £l5O and two sureties of £lOO each.

SCIENCE CONGRESS.

AUCKLAND, January. 25.

A busy day was spent by the delegates to the Dominion Science Congress to-day. The Congress divided into various sections, in which technical papers of interest were read and discussed. A wide range of entertainment has been arranged for the visitors during the -week-end.

MOTOR CYCLIST INJURED.

ROTORUA, January 26

A serious accident happened on the Mamaku Hill at 7.55 last night, when a motor-cycle rider, Wellington Styles, of Rotorua, collided with the “Sun” passenger service car, driven by Harold Bates. The motor cyclist received a compound fracture of the right leg and now lies in King George V Hospital.

COMMON ASSAULT. INVERCARGILL, January 24.

Allan Lamb, a farm labourer, appeared in the Police Court this morning before Mi’ G. Cruickshank, S.M., on the indictable charge of assaulting Robert Edward Bulling, at Rimu on the morning of January 18, with a hedge slasher, so as to cause him actual bodily harm. The wounds inflicted on Bulling were comparatively slight. It was suggested by the police that if the Magistrate thought it advisable the indictable charge should be replaced by one of common assault. This was agreed to, and after hearing the evidence, the Magistrate convicted accused, and released him on probation for a period of two years.
