HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

HOKITIKA, January 26.

The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. Jas. King, A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff, E. W. Heenan, Dr. Teichelmann. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. Jeffries, Evans and Heinz. The secretary, Municipal Association, Wellington, wrote advising that the conference of delegates would be held at Wanganui on March 6, 1929, and forwarding copies of order paper. —Received.

New Zealand Refrigerating Coy., Christchurch, wrote advising that a half carcase of meat was delivered into Hokitika during the month of December, 1925.

Tho Secretary, Reefton School Committee, wrote applying for use of Cass Square for th© annual picnic on Wednesday, February —Granted. Mr Dawson applied for the us© of Cass Square for merry-go-round on the same terms as last letting.—Granted at £3 per week. Councillors were strongly opposed to the games that were being played, considering there was too much of th© gambling element in them. It. was decided that in future these games be not allowed on tho Square. Arnold J. Thompson wrote asking for reconsideration of decision regarding septic tank. —Referred to Health Inspector, th© Council > having no objection. W. Wilson, agent for Mrs B. T. Thompson, application for approval of subdivision of valuation No'. 229, Sections 993/998 and 3320.—Council consents to sub-division, the section being large. Under-Secretary, Department Internal Affairs, Wellington, wrote pointing out that th© biennial election of Fire Boards is to be held next month, and asking for names of two members elected by this Council. —The Hon. IT. L. Michel and Mr Elcock were reappointed. 1 Malcolm Henry Houston applied for auctioneer’s license under Section 5 of the Auctioneers’ Act, 1908, to March 31, 1929. —Granted.

Win. Allen, Mosgiel, forwarded donation of £1 1/- to Cass Square, having used th© Square as a camping ground during holidays.—Received. From Kanieri Electric Co., Ltd., submitting list of current electric light charges in other places. The Councillors expressed satisfaction at the arrangements made for lighting, and the cordial delations that exist between the Company and the Council. On the motion of Cr. Duff it was decided to send a letter to Kanieri- Electric Ltd., expressing appreciation in the Company’s action in extending th© lighting time from midnight to 2 a.m. The Secretary, Paroa School Committee, applied for the us© of Cass Square for the annual picnic bn February 1G. —Granted.

The Secretary, Blackball Picnic Committee, applied for. the use of Cass Square on February 1. —Granted. Hon. Secretary, Tennis Club, Herepo, applied for nine barrels of tar. It was resolved to inform the Club that the Council required the tar for the streets, but if there were any to spare it would be granted. The Sexton was granted his annual leave, providing provision is made for a substitute.

The Treasurer reported receipts amounting to £174 3/10, payments £287 17/3; credit balance £99 5/10; credit, on fixed deposit, £l2OO. Accounts amounting to £1314 were passed for payment.

At the instance of Cr. Duff it was decided to refer the cutting of gorse from the street leading from Sewell Street to the main road.
