RICCARTON NOTES.

CAMPBELL LOSES LICENSE

(Special to "Star.”)

CHRISTCHURCH, January 24. Honour’s brilliant victory in the Wellington Stakes quite made good his claim to be considered the best of this season’s batch of two-year-olds. That he will develop into a really highclass three-year-old admits of no doubt for he combines both speed and stamina. It is quite on the cards that he will be laid aside for several months, and then be got ready for the A.J.C. Derby. During the progress of the Wellington meeting, negotiations were in progress to ensure Aussie’s presence at Wingatui. His inclusion in the Hazlett Gold Cup field would lend much interest to that event, which otherwise appears to be almost at Limerick’s mercy.

Aspiring went off on the eve of the Wellington meeting, and could not fulfil her engagements on either day. The trouble is only temporary, and is unlikely to effect her racing at Wingatui. Hoylake’s poor showing in the Wellington Cup is accounted for by the return of trouble to one of his knees. He is now back at Riccarton and may not bo raced again till the C.J.C. Autumn Meeting comes round. Rotor met with a. slight mishap prior to the Wellington meeting ,and

returned home without sporting silk. A cracked heel also prevented Noteworthy fulfilling any of his engagements. With Rotor, he was shipped homo on Tuesday. Though Semper Paratus failed to race up to expectations on the opening day of the ’Wellington meeting, this may be explained by the fact of his rider having been caught in the tapes. His experience at Trentham will do the Chokebore-trained colt a lot of good, and he will be worth while keeping in mind for autumn engagements.

The sister to Commendation, purchased by Mr Greenwood at Wellington for 1000 guineas, is one of the best-looking yearlings offered at the sale. She is just the sort to come to hand early, and it would come as no surprise to find her carrying Mr Greenwood’s colours at Randwick next spring.

The well-known Riccarton horseman, J. Campbell, has had his license withdrawn by the Licensing Committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference.

In the absence of so many horses and trainers at Wingatui, there has been little doing at headquarters during the present week. Aynsley is keeping Footfall going, with the idea of racing him at Wingatui, and the gelding is standing up to his tasks quite to his trainer’s satisfaction. H. .Nurse has a useful team in work lor the Dunedin meeting. He has been keeping Rapier up to the collar, but it is doubtful if the Greyspear horse wiH be ready to show his best form at Wingatui.

When contesting the Wellington Cup, Beau Geste met with injuries which precluded him starting again at the meeting, and he was shipped home the same night. PROSPECTS FOR TAKAPUNA The acceptances received for the I opening day’s events for the Takapuna Jockey; Club’s summer meeting are]

WELLINGTON, January 24. The second day of the Wellington races was held to-day. With the exception of a couple of showers, the weather was fine. There was only a fair attendance, owing to it being an off day, and the tote handled £50,254,

as compared with £75,692 for tbe second day last year. Remaining results :—

Wellington Racing Club Handicap, one mile and three furlongs.—l 4 Yoma (A. Murray) 1; 2 Historic, 2; 4 Pink Note 3. Also started: 10 Rapine, 1 Vertigern, 8 Hynanna, 2 The Hawk, 9 Star Area, 11 .joy Bird, 7 Concentrate, 5 Papatu, 6 Royal Saxon, 12 White Fang, 13 Prickles. Won by a head ; a neck ; White Fang fourth. Time 2.20 g.

Douro Cup Handicap, one mile —1 Gold Cure (A. Hobson) 1 • 16 Great Star 2; 14 Latin Quarter 3. Also started: 10 Henna, 11 Millais, 19 Gold Dawn, 7 Stanchion, 13 Home Made, 17 Briar Root, 2 Royal Lineage, 21 High Court, 8 Rory Mor, 15 Filosei. 9 Full Mark, 3 Llanore, 5 Toawai, 12 Spear-

It is quite likely that the scratchingpen will be freely used in this event as Prodice claims an engagement in the Cup, High Finance, Jolly Money and Macroom in the Stewards Handicap. Prodicfe will probably take on the cup, where she will be bracketed with Desert Glow. High Finance will probably start in her later engagement, while both Jolly Money and Macroon will find the distance and the company to their liking. Takapuna Cup, 11 furlongs and 40 yards.—Transformer B.S, Prodice 8.2, Royal Doulton 8.0, Flying Juliet 7.13, Desert Glow 7.11, Wenday 7.9, Thursby 7.4, Hyde Park, The Lover, Right and Left, Eager Rose 7.0. The principal event has not drawn the class of horse a £lOOO stake warrants; quite a number will be troubled by the distance and the only ones that have any pretensions to stay are Transformer, Prodice, Royal Doulton and perhaps Thursby. The Te Awamutu trainer F. Loomb appears to hold a strong hand with the aid of Prodice and Desert Glow and they may be the public fancy; however, Transformer is a force to be reckoned with as evidenced by his second to Pegaway in the Auckland Racing Club Handicap, and with the bracket may give most trouble when the Judge is in sight.

Ferry Handicap, seven furlongs.— Glen Star 5.13, Owairaka 8.11, Beau Cavalier, Good Boy 8.10, British King 8.4, Justify 8.2, High Tide, Mussie. Hone Heke 8.0, Sir Mond, Brilliant Light, Tea Money 7.12, Gay Cockade 7.10, Quinsillia, Cybele 7.8, Palmares 7.7.

The field engaged in the Ferry Handicap is, not by any means good and backers will probably rely on most recent form in which to pin their faith. Glenstar is a recent winner; but also has a later engagement if started in this event will carry a lot of money. Good Boy is another that has performed well of late —a win and two placed performances at Thames. Mussie ran into the money at the Auckland Cup carnival and on that form alone will be troublesome and it would come as no surprise were he Good Boy and Glenstar the ones to fight it out at the finish. Calliope Handicap, five furlongs.— Eaglet 8.11, Flying Princess 8.7, Gemlight 8.5, Carl Idem 8.2, Awamutu S.O, Cymon 7.10, Polyxena 7.9, Fraser 7.7, Trig 7.5, Bennie 7.3, Tasty 7.2, Currajong 7.1, Fairy Belle, Norval Tea, Royal Finance, Talette, Lady Suzanne 7.0.

In the Calliope Handicap the two-year-olds will have their chance. The top weight, Eaglet, on form has a chance, while Flying Prince if he were to reproduce his early spring form would have an undeniable chance. Glenlight has recent form to recom-

mend him but nothing impresses more than Jamieson’s Australian importa-

tion Polyxena who just failed to catch Gay Ballerina in the two-year-old

handicaps at the Cup Carnival. A repetition of that effort will land him a wjnner. Gemlight and Flying Prince

seem to be his most serious opponents.

Hauraki Handicap, nine furlongs.— Tidal 9.1, Glen Star 5.12, Star Comet 8.10, Arikitoa 8.7. War Officer 8.3, Whaka King 8.2, Loveband 8.1, Brampton, Salamander 7.8, Exalted, Mon Star, Arch Queen 7.7. The distance of the Hauraki Hack Handicap will suit Tidal who has previously shown his ability to success-

fully cover this journey in similar

company. Glenstar will probably fav-

our this distance to that of the Ferry Handicap. Arikitoa is another who has

the speed and can get the distance and

with Tidal may be prominent at the finish.

Stewards’ Handicap, six furlongs.— Lady’s Boy, High Finance 7.13, Vallar

7.9, Jolly Money 7.5, Macroom, Melissa 7.3, Lorient 11. 7.1, Ballymoy 11, Taku-

tama, Ruffles, Katarina, Appellant 7.0. The open sprint will see a rush to be on Vallar by reason of his second to Paganelli on the final day of the Cup Carnival. High Finance is in form at present but Vallar should hold her safe. Chis pair may be the ones to fight out the end.

well up to standard. A most interesting feature connected therewith is the fact that the horses engaged'" are owned and trained in the Auckland Province. Racing commences with the: Trial Stakes, seven furlongs.—The Begum, Diamond Queen 9.0, Arihama, Odin, Standfast, Onewhero, Princess Rain, Bold Archer, Roman Pearl, K.awainga, Carmint, Prince or Orange, Zane Grey, Lady Eustace, Parfait Amor, Six' Mond, Otranto, Land Measure, Bonny Day, Optimistic. Critique 8.0. In this event quite a number are unknown quantities, but of those who have faced the starter and who should perform well are The Begum—a brother to Supremacy—Princess Rain and Kaiwanga. Orewa Handicap, nine furlongs.— Ripon Abbey 9.11, Glena Bay 9.9, Bizarro 9.6, Zircon 9.5, Royal Form 9.4, Mashoor, Always, Salamander 9.1, Marble Mount, Pekatahi, Master Arch, Harbor View, Template 9.0.

The candidates in this event are t( be ridden by hurdle or steeplechasf riders. The Hannon' stable is repre seated by Ripon Abbey and the class Should suit him. Glena Bay appreciates these events, but was a disappoint meat at the Manawatu Christmas fix. ture. Bizarro won a similar class ol event at the Thames and is in form. Ripon Abbey, Bizarro and Glena Bay may dispute the finish. Zealandia Handicap, seven furlongs. —The Lamb 8.6, Prodice 8.5, High Finance 7.13, Hippo 7.10, Ti Tree, Jolly Money 7.7, Macroom 7.6, Scat 7.2, Cynthia N„ 7.1, Master O’Rorke, Lunette 7.0.
