ALLEGED ASSAULT

SEQUEL TO MOTOR JAUNT.

NEWCASTLE, January 1.

An attempt to assault a young Newcastle girl is alleged to have been made by three young men on. a bush, track, near Swansea, in the early hours of this morning. The girl, it is understood, was one of three who accompanied the youths on a motor car drive from Newcastle last evening. While she was struggling fiercely against her assailants, who had her pinned down in the car, her comP an l° ns attempted to find her assistance on the main Swansea —Newcastle road. They were fortunate in stopping a motor car, the occupants of which, apprised of what was happening, rushed into the bush and pulled the girl out of the car. ' It is alleged that while she was being helped back to the road, a shot was fired at her rescuers/ and struck the ground only a few inches behind their feet. , ' : . ■ The car excursion which ended so seriously had been entered upon quite unsuspectingly by the girls, and it was not till the neighbourhood of Swansea had been reached that they had reason to complain of the treatment they were receiving. Then the car suddenly shot off the main road and came to a halt well away from the view of passers-by. The course of events began to alarm the girls, and they thought it well leave the car. Two of them succeeded in gaining the safety of the highway, and frantic for their companion’s safety, they - looked around to see from what direction they might'bring help. It was only a few minutes, however, befpre the car which they succeeded in stopping came along the road. The plea for help that they sobbed . out was confirmed by shrieks from the captive girl. The two men from whom assistance was asked did not delay. To a shouted threat that they wdul4 be shot, if they interfered with other people, they paid no* attention. A moment later they found that the threat was not a vain one. A gun was raised and went off, but they regained the road -unharmed and brought the gij-ls safely back into Newcastle.
