LADY DOCTOR KILLED
TRAGEDY AT HOSPITAL. (Per Press Association.) GORE, January 12. A sad accident, resulting in the death of Dr. A. Mathieson, resident lady medical officer at Gorb Hospital, occurred at that institution at 11.15 o’clock this morning. Dr. Mathieson was working with carbolic acid when by some means the bottle was smashed, and the acid splashed over her face and body, and 1 it immediately began its deadly work. Dr Mathieson also suffered from shock and in a short while became unconscious. Dr. Lillie was immediately called in and resuscitation efforts continued for three hours. These efforts were of no avail. Dr. Mathieson slowly sank and her death occurred between 1.50 and 2 o’clock this afternoon. Dr. Mathieson came to Gore Hospital from Dunedin some four or five months ago, and proved a popular and efficient officer.
INQUEST AND VERDICT
GORE, January 14.
At the inquest on Dr. A. Mathieson, evidence showed that the deceased was lifting a heavy bottle of carbolic acid when it smashed, deceased being severely spattered. She called for assistance and collapsed. Medical opinion was that death was due to severe shock following extensive skin injury, the occurrence without doubt being a pure accident.
A verdict along these lines was re urned by the coroner. Deceased was 28 years of age.
Dr. A. Mathieson was the daughter of the late Inspector Mathieson, formerly in charge of the West Coast Police District.
