POPE’S JUBILEE YEAR
PLENARY INDULGENCES.
(Times Cables.) (By Cable—Press Assn.—Copyright.)
LONDON, January 11.
“The Times’s” Rome correspondent says the Pope announces that 1929, which marks the Jubilee of his first Mass, shall be considered a holy year, with extra ordinem. He accordingly grants during the year plenary indulgence, on four conditions: — Firstly, the faithful dwelling in the diocese of Rome, and pilgrim* thereto must twice visit three named basilicas in order to pray, particularly for the converesion of sinners and the extirpation of heresy and schism; peace, concord and prosperity, and freedom of the Catholic Church and Head thereof. If persons are prevented by distance, or other legitimate reason, from complying, confessors may commute them to visits to a parish church. Secondly, additional fasts mugt be observed; and thirdly, to make additional confession, and partake of extra Communion. Fourthly, make charitable offerings according to means and according to confessor’s advice, such offering to be made for an important work; for example, the propagation and preservation of faith. The Jubilee indulgence may be earned several times, but additional indulgences must be for the benefit of souls in purgatory. The Pope believes that the faithful should hasten to avail themselves of this precious spiritual opportunity for morals, faith and Christian piety.
