RAILWAY MISHAP. MELBOURNE. Jan. 11.
A sensational development, as the result of the rail motor accident on the Geelong line, was the withdrawal from service yesterday of all cars of a similar type to that involved in the accident.
POPULATION INCREASE.
SYDNEY, January 11.
An analysis of the Commonwealth population for ten years, 1917 to 1927, compiled by the Commonwealth Statistician, shows the population increased by 1,252,791 to 6,234,854, representing an average rate of increase of 2.27 per cent, per annum. FIRE AT SYDNEY. SYDNEY, January 10. Fire occurred in the thickly ' congested area in the vicinity of the city fish mart to-night. A three-storied building, occupied by a Chinese, Mow Shang, as produce store, was seriously damaged and the contents ruined. Firemen discovered a Chinese employee, Charlie Young, on the top floor, almost overcome by smoke, in his bunk. They brought him to safety down the escape.
