PAPAL HOUSEHOLD

OFFICE OF MAJOR-DOMO.

The Papal Household is to be reorganised, and the historic and picturesque office, that of major-domo, the highest post in the gift of the Pontiff, save that of Cardinal, is to disappear (says a Rome message to the London Sunday Times.) Monsignor de Semper, who has been at the right hand of the Pope in all ceremonials, audiences, processions, and celebrations, has resigned so as to “make easy a general reorganisatin of the Papal household.” Monsignor de Semper has served under four Popes. He was secretary to Leo. XII. and Pius X., and became majordomo under Benedict XV. The Pope intends to divide the work hitherto carried out by the major-domo between the Chamberlain and the Prefect of the Apostolic Palaces.
