HOLIDAY RACING

DOMINION-WIDE MEETINGS AFFECTED BY WET WEATHER Flags were flying on numerous racecourses in New Zealand yesterday, when the holiday carnival commenced, but the wet weather which ruled practically all over the Dominion exercised a depressing effect, and this was reflected in decreased totalisator returns, particularly at Auckland, where the big drop of over £35,000 was recorded. Slig t increases were shown at the Ashburton Trotting Club and Waipukurau Jockey Club Meetings. The Westland Racing Club was Favoured with beautiful weather, but despite this advantage, the totalisator showed a drop of nearly £lOOO as compared with the corresponding day last year. The small fields, which averaged only about five horses per race, probably had an effect on the betting. A peculiar feature of the weather conditions on the West Coast was the fact that, while Hokitika enjoyed brilliant sunshine, Westport experienced rain of so heavy a nature that the first day of the Westport Trotting Club s Meeting had to be postponed until to-day. * Following were the results of the various meetings: —
