FRENCH FARM LABOUR
HIGH WAGES DEMANDED. (Australian Press Association.) (By Cable—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received December 27, 11 a.m.) PARIS, December 26. The annual farm labour auction held at St Etienne, in accordance with ancient custom, illustrated forcibly France’s labour shortage. Only a dozen farm labourers and shepherds were put on the block, and there weie eight bidders for every one offered. Girl shepherds, hardly over 13, brought three thousand francs each for the year’s labour, plus two new dresses. Adult farm hands brought from four thousand to five thousand francs, with extra inducements. The auction presented the. usual ’colourful scene. Tradition permits that every year on the day after Christmas, farm workers dissatisfied with theii jobs may try their luck in the market.
