RAT MENACE

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Re article in your columns of December 5, about rat menace. I was very pleased to read it. I do not know much about the habits of the rat, except for his chewing in the wall, but as for his diet, I believe his special one is. fat. A little bit- of it rendered down in an old dish and left to cool off: powder up some strychnine on a piece of paper, a bottle is a good thing for a. roller, take powder and sprinkle lightly over the fat, place in a portable box, made for the purpose, that the. vermin can get in with ease, not forgetting to label it “poison.” Traps are little or no use; they get cunning to them. Sometimes mice let them off. Phosporous is not much good. It takes too long to kill, giving them a chance to climb about (he walls committing another nuisance. It is not only a good medicine for the occasion, but it registers how many had supper the first night. Yours etc. POISON. Greymouth, Dec. 9.
