KUMARA NOTES

(Oar Own Correspondent.) Dr Booth, who has been absent in Christchurch, returned to Kuamara on Thursday last. Mr A. Thorn, sen., whilst at work the other day, had the misfortune to have two fingers crushed. He will lie unable to resume work for some time. The carpenters at work on the new school are making good headwoy with the erection of the building. Friday evening saw the walls up and the roof on, and it now seems reasonably certain the school will be ready for occupation early in the New Year. On Saturday evening at about live o’clock, Mr A. G. Wood, licensee of the Theatre Royal. Hotel, was taken suddenly ill, and the doctor being sent for, ordered his immediate removal to the Westland Hospital, where an operation was performed. The operation was successful, and the patient is reported to be as well as can be expected. The annual concert in- aid of St. Patrick’s School took place at the Memorial Hall on Friday evening, and was largely attended. The various items in the programme were well received and brought forth considerable applause. At the conclusion of the entertainment, the Rev. Father Lordan, on behalf of the Sisters of Mercy, returned thanks to all those who had contributed to the success of the concert; especially to those performers, who had at considerable inconvenience, come long distances. Special thanks laso were due to Mr Wilton, who had not only contributed several items, but had filled the gap in the programme caused by the unavoidable absence of one of the performers. Miss Mary Gilbert and Mrs West were the accompanistes for the evening and ably carried out their duties. In acknowledging the receipt of the proceeds of the ball recently held for the benefit of the Grey branch of the Plunket Society, Mrs M. C. Denton, hon. secretary, in a letter to Mr Spiers, says : —“I beg to acknowledge cheque for £l6, being proceeds of ball held recently at Kumara. Will you please convey to the members of your Committee the sincere thanks of the members of the Grey branch for the splendid donation, and their deep appreciation of the interest shown in the work being carried out by the society in this district.”
