Mr Joseph Taylor, of Cobden, returned on Saturday from Wellington. Hon. H. L. Michel and Mrs Michel returned to Hokitika on Saturday after a visit to Wellington. Mr W J. Mcllroy, of Christchurch, arrived on Saturday on a visit to Greymouth. The death is announced from Cannes of General Sir Arthur Paget, aged 77. He had a distinguished military career. Senior-Sergeant”L Cummings, of Auckland, has been appointed Sub-ln-spector at Dunedin. Press Assn. Miss Porteous, of Wellington, arrived on Saturday, on a visit to Mr and Mrs F. Harley, Cowper Street. Mr G. Stitt, managing director for the Brunner Collieries arrived from Auckland on Saturday. He expects to return on Thursday. A cablegram from Chicago announced the death of Mr James A. Patten, at one time.the “Wheat King of the United States, from pneumonia. Misses E. Walshe (South Beach), and E. Panckhurst (Greymouth), of ’ the Christchurch Training College, returned home on Saturday for the Christmas vacation. Guests at Bevington’s Hotel include: Messrs Gresham, Hill, Bostock (Christchurch), Brown, Orr (Wellington), Brooken (Wanganui), Mrs Friend, Misses Friend, Lewis (Wanganui). The Hawera Trotting Club has appointed Mr C. E. Goosman, of Hamilton as handicapper vice Mr Geo. Paul jnr„ resigned, owing to his appointment with the Metropolitan Club.— Press Assn. Mr Donald A. H. Cambridge, junior linesman in the Greymouth Post Office Telegraph staff, has received notice of his transfer to Wellington. He will leave shortly to commence his new duties. The nine-year-old daughter, Ruby, of Mr. and Mrs. D. Anderson, ot Kaiata, died from diphtheria yesterday at the Greymouth Hospital, where she had been a patient since Thursday. A Melbourne message stated that while playing an excerpt from ‘Messiah” at the Church of England, St. Kilda, the organist, Henry Inge, collapsed and died. He was a relative of Dean Inge.

Captain W. Strachan, who recently resigned from the position of Senior Signalman to the Greymouth Harbour Board, left by the Ihumata on Saturday evening for Melbourne. He will visit relatives in Geelong, and expects to return to Greymouth in January. Lady Alice Fergusson arrived at Auckland by train on Saturday morning, on her way to spend a holiday fin Three Kings Islands, beyond North Cape. With her Excellency is a party bf five including Captain Orr Ewing, A.D.C. The part left at noon by the Government steamer Tutanekai. Lady Alice and her friends will camp at Three Kings, and will spend some Weeks there bathing, boating, fishing and sight-seeing—Press Assn. Fifty years of association with local government matters, 20 of them spent as Town Clerk of Auckland, will be celebrated to-morrow by Mr H. W. Wilson, now Town Clerk of Northcote. Mr Wilson, who is 65 years of age,' came from Dunedin to be Town Clerk of Auckland in 1900, and held the position until 1920, when he resigned and after resting for a time, assumed bis present position. At one stage of his career he was actingTown Clerk of Dunedin, at the age of 18 (telegraphed our correspondent). An Auckland message stated that Mr William Henry Bagnall, 83, died yesterday. He migrated from Prince Edward Island, Canada, in 1864 (taking six months to make the passage in a sailer). His father was a member of the Legislature there. William was a member of the firm of Bagnall Bros, large timber millers at Turua. He retired in 1917. He is survived by a widow and family or five including Hon. W. Garfield Bagnall, Tongan Minister of Finance.

The funeral of the late Mr Samuel Groom, which took place yesterday afternoon, was very largely attended. Prior to the funeral, a Masonic service was held at the Lodgeroom, Tainui Street, the officers and members of the following Lodges being present: Mark Masons, Royal Arch Chapter, Rose Croix, Greymouth, Mawhera, Lazar, Brunner, Runanga and Blackball. The pall-bearers were three members each from the Runanga and Greymouth Lodges, to which the deceased belonged. The service at Karoro Cemetery was conducted by the Wor. Master of Lodge Runanga, Bro. W. P. Patterson, and Anglican Church service was conducted by Bro. Rev. W. Bell.

The death o£ Mr James Hayden, a well-known West Coaster, took place at his residence at Rutherglen on Saturday. Deceased, who was 73 years of age, had been in ill-health for a considerable time. A native of St. Kevern, Cornwall, he voyaged to Australia in the ship Somerset 50 years ago, and, after staying some months with relatives in the Commonwealth, he came to the West Coast, and made his home at Rutherglen. He was a member of a party of Cornish goldminers operating in tUe Rutherglen locality, and later he purchased the business of the late Mr Edwin Coumbo, a carrier, and conducted it until failing health caused his retirement about two years ago. He was. for many years Chairman of the Paroa School Committee, and was one of the oldest members of the Foresters’ Lodge. He assisted in the early days in every movement to collect money for the hospital, and took a keen interest in County matters. He is survived by his widow, four daughters (Mesdames Kevern, of East Eyreton; Bromley, of Rutherglen; and Misses Lily and Nellie Hayden, of Rutherglen); and two sons (Mr Samuel Hayden, of the Post and Telegraph Department, Greymouth, and Mr Lewis Hayden, of Rutherglen). The funeral took place this afternoon, leaving Rutherglen for Karoro Cemetery. The service at the deceased’s residence and at the cemetery was conducted by the Rev. W. Bell. Mr Perkins conducted the service of the Foresters’ Lodge.
