REEFTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, Dec.”lo. An earthquake shock was experienced at Reefton yesterday at 3.55 p.m. the direction being from north to south and it was of short duration and so far no damage is reported. Heavy rain has been experienced at Reefton during the past 36 hours and will be much appreciated by the dairy farmers and gardeners. Some of the showers were particularly heavy. Mr. Fred Richards an employee at Rough River sawmill, sustained injury on Friday night through’a horse he was riding stumbling badly when crossing Rough River whereby the rider was thrown on to the big boulders in the river bed having a collar bone broken and being otherwise injured. He was brought to Reefton Hospital on Saturday morning where his injuries were attended. Mr. W. F. Brett, County Engineer, visited the Maruia District on Friday and Saturday last. He reports that excellent progress is being made with the road between Springs Junction and Maruia Springs, some 30 men beingemployed there at present. At present it is difficult to get a car to the Springs but by Christmas the road will be in good condition for traffic. Visitors will be surprised at the work accomplished and the road will be a great boon to visitors to the Springs.
