QUEENSLAND V. ENGLAND. (Australian Press Association.) (By Cable—Press Assn.—Copyright.) WARWICK (Queensland), Dec. 9. The match between Queensland country team and England was commenced to-day. Queensland in the first innings made 128. McCombe 36, Peachey 38. Freeman took eight wickets for 32, and Geary one for 30. England in the first innings lost six wickets for 427 (Sutcliffe 77, Tyldesley 115, Hammond 110). Cooper took one wicket for 78, Broadfoot one for 88, Drews 2 for 90, Blaxland one for 47.

FREAK MATCH. LONDON, December 9. J. C. Squire, editor and poet, is arranging to aid hospitals, with a cricket match on New Year’s Day, on the historic ground where the Hambleton men founded the first English cricket club in 1750. The teams will be Squires’ Invalids v. Hampshire Esquimos. He says that rain, hail or snow, they shall play the match. Flannels will be compulsory, and gloves be permitted if it is freezing. There will be a matting wicket, and plenty of hot coffee if snow sweeps the pitch. HAWKE CUP MATCH. WANGANUI, December 9. The Hawke Cup elimination match, Wanganui v. Taranaki, was continued yesterday in perfect weather. The wicket was still good, when Wanganui’s not out men Giesen (96) and Sewell (1), resumed, the home eleven’s total for the loss of five wickets being 192 at the close of the first day’s play. The second ball of the first over, saw Giesen dismissed, caught by Quickfall, in the slips. The Wanganui batsmen collared the bowling. The tail added 177 runs before the end came. The principal contributors were Sewell (73), Hitchison (35), Darby (26), London (9). For'Taranaki, Petty took four for 95, Quickfall three for 95, Lay one for 40, Nasmith two for 77. Taranaki (first innings 190), commenced the second innings with Wilson and Nasmith, the first wicket falling when the total w r as 41, Nasmith going leg before to Treadwell with 21 to his credit. Lay joined Wilson, and ' the pail- had added nearly two hundred whop stumps were drawn for the day. Lay reached a century shortly before . time, being 105 not out. Wilson was ' 91. LOCAL COMPETITION MATCHES. Rain again interfered with week-end cricket matches, no games being played on Saturday. .Yesterday, despite decidedly miserable conditions, United B’s and Star seniors fulfilled their competition fixture, United B winning the game by 16 runs. United’s total reached 115 runs, and Stars 99. The best performance was an innings of 48, by the Stars’ man, Mullins, a veteran at the game, who this year has been several times successful with bat and ball. Nightingale, for United, played a fine innings for 41. Thompson (Stars) and Restieaux (United), shared the bowling honours, with 6 for 31 and 6 for 43 respectively. Restieaux is a promoted junior. Brunner “A” hit up 77 and declared in the second with one wicket down for 52 runs, thus winning the game. For Brunner, Kennedy, in the first innings, batted through for 36 not out. KOKIRI DEFEAT KUMARA Kokiri defeated Kumara, at Kumara

yesterday, by 18 runs in the first innings. Kumara’s total was 104, and Kokiri’s 122. WATERSIDERS V. WANDERERS. Wanderers suffered defeat at the hands of Watersiders at Omoto by an innings and 12 runs. Wanderers’ two’ strikes realised 33 and 34, compared with 79 from the Watersiders in their one innings.' Wilson (25), and Comerford (24) were the winners’ chief run-getters. Wanderers’ downfall in the second innings was due to some excellent bowling by H. Brown, who took 6 wickets for 9 runs, including the hat trick. TECHNICAL v. HOKITIKA D.H-S

The first inter-school cricket match between Greymouth Technical High and Hokitika District High Shools was played on the Technical High School grounds on Saturday, the Greymouth School eleven winning tire game by an innings and 13 runs. Rain interfered somewhat with the play. The game was an interesting one, providing some good cricket. Good performances were registered with the bat by Tennent (25), Rose (12), and J. Shuttleworth (15) for Technical High, and Wilson (15) and Stoop (17) for the visitors. Bowling for Technical High, Tarrant took 2 for 7, Lindbom 5 for 15, and 3 for 11, Shaw 4 for 14 and 4 for 4, and Shuttleworth 2 for 6. For the visitors French took 6 for 28. A feature of the game was some fine wicket-keeping by Shaw (Tech.) and the winners’ good fielding. Hokitika were used to playing on concrete wickets, and were handicapped in that respect on the grass pitch at the school.
