PERSONAL NOTES

Mr L. W. Gresham will arrive from Christchurch this afternoon.

Mr and Mrs R. Glen, of Wellington, are visiting the West Coast.

Mrs E. A. Wickes, of Auckland, is on a short visit to Greymouth.

Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., will arrive this afternoon from Christchurch.

Miss Edith Daniel (Stillwater), is visiting Mount Pleasant Rest House, as the guest of Mr and Mrs Morel.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Leitch left today for Christchurch, where Mr. Leitch will make his future headquarters.

Mrs. D. Ferguson, who has been visiting lier parents Mr. and Mrs. O. Brailsford, Cobden, returned to-day to Christchurch.

Mrs. T. Brebner left this morning for Christchurch whither she has been called owing to the illness of her mother.

The Rev. J- A. Jermyn is now able to leave his bed for a few hours daily, and has this week been taken tor short motor-drives.

Mr R. A. Horne, manager of the Bristol Piano Company, who has been visiting Westport, has returned to Greymouth. He will return to Christchurch next week.

Guests at the Albion Hotel include. Mr and Mrs Grey, Messrs K. L. Vincent, A. J. Linney (Wellington), A. H. Flavell (Dunedin), D. Ross, H. Nunherley, R. A. Horne (Christchurch).

Mr T. O. Bishop, Secretary of the , New Zealand Employers’ Federation, who has been confined to his home m Wellington for the past week, has resumed duties.

Guests at Revington’s Hotel include: Mrs Askenback (Inchbonnie), Messrs Spong (Dunedin), Orr, Bostock, Cam XChristchurch), Mr and Mrs Van Hise (Honolulu), Miss Blanche, Miss Morrison.

The Very. Rev. Father Rieu, of Rome Superior-General of the Marist Order, who is making a world tour visiting the colleges and houses of the Order, is expected to arrive in Wellington in January. He is accompanied by the Rev. Father Francis Moran, his assistant.

The Rev. Fathers T. McCarthy’ (Marist missioner) and for many years in Greymouth, and C. O'Reilly (exProvincial), both of Wellington, who attended the General Chapter of the Marist Order at Rome, as delegates from New Zealand, arrived at Auckland this week. They return to Wei lington next week.

The death of Mr Samuel Groom took place at the Grey Hospital at 6.15 o’clock last evening after an illness extending over the past year,, three ■months of which were spent in the Grey Hospital. Deceased was a native of West Bromwich, Stafford, England, and came to New Zealand with his parents when a boy. He was 53 years of age. He resided in Brunnerton for a number of years. In 1906 with his brothers, Robert and Thomas, he opened a butchery business in Tainui St. He was a director in the Brunner Collieries Ltd., and a shareholder in the Westland Shipping Coy. He was an enthusiastic member of the Greymouth Boxing and Old Boys’ Associations, and was also a Freemason. He visited his relatives at Home four years ago; also Scotland and France. For several years he was a member of the Greymouth Bowling Club. He was unmarried and is survived by his parents, Mr and Mrs S. Groom, of Paroa, three brother Robert and Thomas (Greymouth), George (Runanga), and two sisters, Mrs A. Gilbert (Paroa), and Mrs W. Wick (Runanga). The funeral will take place to-morrow at 2.30 p.m. being preceded by a Masonic service in the Lodge room, Tainui Street at 1.30 p.m.

Mr H. Wylie, who has been in charge of the Greymouth Railway Workshops for the past 18 months, and has been appointed to be workshops Foreman at Eastown (Wanganui), was met by the Workshops staff yesterday afternoon, and presented with a solid leather suitcase. In making the presentation, Mr R. H. Bali said the staff regretted Mr Wylie’s removal after so short a period in Greymouth, but congratulated him on his promotion. He had always been kindly in his dealings with the staff and at no time had the good feeling in the shop been more marked than under Mr Wylie. The staff hoped Mr Wylie would make use of their present and be gratified and happy in his new environment. Mr Wylie expressed his appreciation of the gift and kind sentiments accompanying it. He said that he had never worked with a better staff, and he was sorry to say goodbye. He was glad some of the senior men had secured well-mer-ited promotion, and hope the turn for other of the staff was not far distant. He hoped the same loyalty which had been accorded him by the staff would be extended to his successor, Mr Slight. After three cheers had been given and “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” sung, the gathering dispersed. Mr and Mrs Wylie, and the Misses Wylie left this morning for Wanganui.
