Premier Tolmie, who gave up the, seat to enter provincial politics, had a majority of 2751, thus a huge majority in what had been a Tory stronghold since 1875, has been cut down. HOBBS’ “LIBEL” CLAIM. LONDON. December 7. Hobbs, (after the libel action) appeared in the Appeal Court and sought leave to appeal against Lord Hewart’s refusal to grant an adjournment. He said that he made the application formally, with the idea of adjourning till he ho could submit the whole matter. Justice Scrutton granted an adjournment. to December 17, when Hobbs can renew the application. PANKHURSTSTATUE LONDON, Dec. 7. The erection of a. statue to Mrs. Pankhurst, either near the House of Commons, or the end of Downing St., the scene of many militant suffrage battles, is the purpose of a fund of £2OOO which her admirers hope to obtain by subscription throughout the world. Mr. A. G. Walker, sculptor of the Florence Nightingale statue, Waterloo Place, has completed a plaster sketch representing Mrs. Pankhurst hatless and attired in her favourite evening coat, in which she appeared on many platforms.
