BABY ROASTED ALIVE

CHINESE “DOCTOR” ARRESTED.

It is a well-known fact that Chinese doctors of the “old school” make some weird concoctions from bats, snakes, rats and other vermin for the curing of ills to which the Chinese flesh is heir. An unregistered Chinese physician named Chang Sui-ping, practising in Chapei, the northern suburb of Shanghai, lias eclipsed his confreres by preparing a decoction composed of the juice of herbs mixed with certain portions of the antomy of a new-born infant.

According to the police report, “Doctor” Chang secured a. new-born infant about six hours old, built a fire in tho yard at the back of his office and proceeded to roast his victim alive. The cries of the infant attracted the attention of the neighbours, who notified the Chinese police. Chang’s house was raided and the police discovered, in addition to basins full of blood, a freshly-roasted infant. “Doctor” Chang was arrested and taken to the constabulary headquarters. Chang informed the authorities that his first thought in preparing his various medicines was for his patients and that he considered outsiders had no right to interfere. Chang also stated that his subject had no claim to a father and that the mother did not care what happened to her child. He had, therefore, purchased the poor unfortunate for ten dollars (£1), and could see no reason for interference by the police. The authorities, however, thought, differently, and “Doctor" Chang had been committed for (rial on a charge of murder.
