NOTES ON THE RACING. (Special t® •'Star.*') CHRISTCHURCH, November 10. What wss one of the most successful racing carnivals ever held in Canterbury was brought to a conclusion today in showery weather. The. attendance kept up well, while the racing was full of interest. A nice field of five went out to contest the Stead Gold Cap, and though Laughing Prince was made a slightly 'better favourite than Ropier, each of ’the others came in for solid support. Goblin Market was the early w.emakef, with Hoylake, who was slow to begin, bringing up the rear. After being first into line for home, Goblin Market failed to sustain his effort, giving place to Rapier and Laughing Prince. Once called on for a final effort Laughing Prince soon settled Rapier’s pretensions, winning comfortably hy nearly two lengths. Hoylake did particularly well to finish within a length 6f Rapier, again demostrating that he was uhlticky to lose the New z'baiad cup. Carinthia showed greatly improved form in the Port Cooper Hurdles, but he was somewhat lucky in losing the opposition of Ned Kelly, who blundered badly at the last fence when going particularly well. Troilus went out to force the pace over the last six furlongs, and put up another solid race. He was on terms with Carinthia at the last jump, and was only beaten by a length in the run home. After running two creditable seconds earlier at the meeting, Historic’s winning turn came in the Cressy Welter, for which he was sent out a pronounced favourite. Buoyant, Pangolin, Money Mine and Gay Sonnet were the early leaders, but all of them faded out a long way from home. At the outer, stand Taboo and Rascal were just heading Historic, but when asked for a final effort the last-named drew right away to defeat Taboo by nearly two lengths. On earlier form backers sorted out Dutch Money and Nedda as the best of the lot that went out to contest the Pioneer Handicap, and their judgment was well vindicated. After being rather troublesome at the barrier, Dutch Money was slow to begin, and was a long way back all through the earlier stages. By a great finishing effort she cut down all but Nedda, who was only a neck to the good as the post Was reached. With a better jump out Dutch Money could hardly have lost. This marked Nedda’s second success at the meeting, and stamped her as a filly of more than average merit. Betting took a wide range in the Members’ Handicap for, though Cimabue wound up favourite, Childsplay, Benzora and Royal Saxon were almost in as good demand. Royal Saxon and Banket carried on the early running, but both retired a long way from home. Before reaching the distance, Red Heckle and Benzora drew right away, aiid in a spirited finish the former just got there by a head. This marked Red Heckle’s third public appearance,
and his record now stands at twc 'wins and a second. Cimabue nevei got into the fighting line, while Childsplay suffered considerable interference. Denier was only in less demand than Sarnia for the Seymour Handicap, but his backers got no run for their money. Taking charge of his rider just before the start he galloped over two miles and was eventually brought back into the birdcage. After Broadmoor had run himself to a standstill Tert Panther and Smithereens drew clear, and in a good finish Panther just got the verdict from Teri by a neck. The winner was one of the outsiders of the field and paid a useful price. Smithereens was always in the fighting line, and only faded out in the lijst one hundred showed that his Derby form was hardly correct, by scoring a meritorious win in the Stonyhurst Handicap. He was always in a handy position, but had to be ridden right out to defeat Moorgas by a head. Consent, who was sent out a staunch favourite, 'gpt bgdly interfered with two furlongs from home, while Prickles also had a rough passage. Pride did not reproduce her Oaks form, but Roi De Vai shaped well enough to suggest his soon getting on the winning list. Backers wept for a recovery on Mandane in the Fendalton Handicap, but though the FordeJi-trained gelding put up a great race, he had no chance with First Sight, who' galloped right away from him over the last furlong. It was an impressive performance on the part of First Sight, and suggests that he is endowed with more stamina than anticipated by his earlier efforts. ) WHANGAREI RACING CLUB. ' SIAOSI WINS PARK. WHANGAREI, November 10. For the second day of the Whangarei races the. weather was windy and showery. NEWS AND NOTES. Mr. R. E. Hatch has notified the Westland Racing Club that he will not be able to fill the duties of starter at the Christmas meeting, he not having been reappointed by the Greymouth Club, which is in the circuit. In the Lyttelton Handicap at Addington on Friday, Harold Burwood led for a mile and a half and then broke badly, interfering with a number of the horses behind him. After an inquiry, the Judicial Committee resolved that the accident was caused by Harold Burwood breaking, and recommended that the Trotting Association should place him on the schooling list as a dangerous horse in harness races. In connection with another incident in the same race, J. M’Lennan was cautioned to be more careful in his driving in future. In the Sprinters’ Handicap, the con'cluding event at Addington, Golden Devon fell near the finish, Logan Holm falling over him. Neither of the horses nor their drivers suffered any injuries. F. Aker drove Waitaki Girl in the Trotting Cup on Tuesday, but as he was indisposed on Friday, an application was made to substitute J. Bryce as the driver in the Christchurch Handicap, but this was refused by the Judicial Committee. The decision was followed by a good deal of talk, and at a meeting of the committee after the race, the owner, H. W. Aker, was fined £lO for defiance of the committee and £2 for not putting in an application for a change of drivers in time. F. Holmes was fined £2 for not applying for a change of horseman for Bonny Logan in the Enfield Handicap. The presence of Prince Humphrey in the Auckland Cup field, to be run on Boxing Day, will lend additional interest to that race.
