SMOKELESS FUEL
GAS COMPANY’S ENTERPRISE. (Australian Press (By Cable—Press Assn.—Copyright.) LONDON, November 9. Smokeless fuel produced at low temperature by the carbonsation process will shortly be available .in London as tihe result of an agreement between the South Metropolitan Gas Company and the Low Temperature Carbonisation Ltd. This is the first gas company in Britain to commercialise the new treatment of coal, which, it is believed, will resuscitate the coalfields. OIL DISTILLATION. LONDON, November 8. In the House of Commons, Mr Herbert Williams said that as soon as a first-class process for the distillation of oil from coal had been discovered, there would be no need for Government assistance. No commercially practical process had yet been evolved but trade processes were improving tremendously. There would possibly be some unemployment in a temporary reaction resulting from cheapened production, but it might mean the beginning of a revival.
