PERSONAL NOTES

Mr J. Calwell, ’ left this morning for Christchurch.

Mr A. McLauchlan, who has been on a visit to the West Coast, left today for Christchurch.

Mr H. Coppersmith, who has been visiting the West Coast, returned today to Christchurch.

Mr and Mrs G. Barltrop, who have been visiting Mr and Mrs R. Seddon, returned this morning to Christchurch.

Mr N. B. McCallum left to-day for Christchurch, and will return next week.

Mr H. Bignell left this morning for Christchurch where he will attend the monthly meeting of the Canterbury Education Board.

Mr J. Connor, Airbrake Inspector to the N.Z. Railways, South Island sections, .who, has been visiting the West Coast, returned to-day to Christchurch.

Mrs- Reed and Miss Eily Scarlett, of Christchurch, and Miss Winnie Scarlet, of Wellington, are visiting their mother, Mrs James Scarlett, of' Reefton.

Mr Robert Ford, of Kumara, has been appointed secretary-traveller to the West Coast Breweries, Ltd., and Mr W. Farrar, accountant. There were nearly 70 applications for the position.

Rev. J. B. S. Bartlett, of Nelson, arrived in Greymouth yesterday afternoon to relieve Rev. J. A. Jermyn, Vicar, of -Holy Trinity. Church, owing to the latter’s illness.

A Sydney cablegram states that the late Lebbeus Hordern’s estate has been valued at one million sterling. A quarter of a million is bequeathed to his widow.

A London message stated that a Canton cablegram regarding Miss Tobin (the New Zealand missionary whose kidnapping was cabled on September 26), states the position is now hopeful in regard to her safety.

At the weekly meeting of the United Debating Club last evening the resignation of Mr. G. D. Smart was submitted, owing to his transfer to Dunedin. It was decided that the resignation be accepted with regret. Mr. Smart, although not taking a very prominent part in the recent activities of the Club, was one of the initial members, a'past secretary, and had always sustained a keen interest in the progress of the Club. It was decided that a letter of appreciation be sent to Mr. Smart for past services.
