Miss V. Kettle returned from Wellington yesterday.

The death is announced from Auckland of Mr F. H. Brinsden, at the age of sixty. He was a member of ' the Auckland City Council.

The appointment as Consular Agent for the United States, of Mr H. H. P. Ballantyne, vice Mr H. P. Bridge, who 'has retired, is gazetted.—Press Assn.

Mr Cyril Heaphy, who underwent a minor operation at the Greymouth Hospital yesterday, is progressing favourably. '

Mr F. W. Harley, of Greymouth, was elected a life member of the Canterbury Automobile Association at its anunal meeting on Wednesday. Members referred to the value of Mr Harley’s work in the cause of motorists.

The following guests are at Bevington’s Hotel: —Mr and Mrs F. Howell (Fendalton), Messrs Procter and Orr (Wellington), Bostock (Christchurch), W. Brownley (Nelson), J. Stanley (Dunedin).

A Press Association message from Stratford announced the death of Mr Joseph McCluggage, one of the pioneers of the Whangamomona district. He opened a store there soon after land was selected, and was closely associated with the district for many ’years.

A Press Association message from .Rotorua reported the death of Lieuten-ant-Colonel John Macintosh Roberts, N.Z.C., the . oldest veteran of New Zealand’s wars. He was born at Bombay, India, in 1840, and arrived in the Dominion in 1855. He was a well-known figure in the Maori wars. He joined Maori Jackson’s Forest Rangers in 1863, and later joined von Tempsky’s corps. He took part in many engagements, notably Orakau, Ngutu-o-te Manu, Moturoa, and Ngatapa. In 1869 he was O.C. of the Urewera expedition column, was mentioned in despatches, and was awarded the New Zealand Cross. From 1870 to 1878 he was O.C. in the Taupo and Tauranga districts. In 1879 to 1881 he was O.C. in Taranaki and commanded at Parihaka. In 1886 he became ■O.C. of the Permanent Militia. He relinquished his military duties in 1888, and was appointed Resident Magistrate, finally retiring in 1909. Two sons and two' daughters survive him.
