SCOTLAND YARD RETIREMENTS.

LONDON, October 7.
Scotland Yard’s Assistant Commissioner, Major General Sir Borlace Childs (who is retiring from the position on November 6, along with Brigadier General Sir William T. F. Horwood, the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police) denies a statement that he will speak out at the right time He has not hinted at any revelations. He says: “When a man leaves a public position such as Scotland Yard, he must dismiss from his mind any knowledge he has there acquired. Otherwise he would be unfit to be an Englishman.” Certain of the newspapers hint at further resignations from Scotland Yard.
KING’S ESSAY PRIZE.

The King has honoured the policemen of the Empire with a new mark of his interest and appreciation of their services. It takes the form of a gold medal to be presented for competition among the men of all the regular police forces. The medal, together with a substantial money prize, will be awarded for the best essay on a set subject, connected with police duties, and the subject chosen for the first year’s competition is “Co-opera-tion between the Police and the Public in the Detection and Prosecution of Crime.” The institution of this competition is announced in a recent Metropolitan Police Order. It will be open to the serving members of the regular police forces within the Empire and its mandated territories. WESTRALIAN AWARD. PERTH, October 9. The new award for police constables in Western Australia provides for £249 a year for recruits with advances to £376 after twenty-five years’ servme. Sergeants will advance to £431 and commissioned officers to £672.
