UNITED 4, GRANITY 1

REEFTON , October 8. A good crowd of spectators turned out to’see this match played on the Racecourse on Saturday, and an interesting game eventuated. United hemmed Granity in its own twenty-five for the first fifteen minutes and, despite a stolid defence by the visitors, only a miracle seemed to save their goal on at least five occasions during this period. Mrs Chandler, the visitors’ goalkeeper, put in some splendid work, but eventually Mrs McCaffrey signalised her reappearance by forcing her way through the centre to score a good goal. United returned to the attack immediately, halves and forwards all joining in trying to have a shot, when suddenly Miss Peg Corby received from a clearance and, taking advantage of the home team’s wide open defence, sped away at a great pace on her own to equalise with a brilliant shot from a dirficult angle. It was the finest solo effort of the match. Another United attack and Mrs McCaffrey soon bullocked her way through the ruck to give the home team the lead again; but from then on Granity began to settle down and enjoy more of the game. After change of ends, United still had slightly the better of the exchanges, but Granity were improving all the time. The home forwards and the visitors’ defence excalled. Misses Cutbush and Smith added goals for United. For Granity, Miss Pearl Chandler played finely throughout, Misses Corby and Marris were good, and little Miss Lafield showed promise of developing into a useful left-wing forward. Mrs Chandler made a grand goalkeeper and effected many fine saves. Mrs McCaffrey and Misses Smith and Cutbush showed up best for the winners. Lisle Warren livened up towards the end ; but the home defence, though not severely tested, did not inspire confidence. Messrs Newton and Lockington were the referees. ,
