NOTES ON THE RACING.
(Special to “Star.")
AUCKLAND, October 6. High Falutin,’ Kinross and Violation failed to parade for the Great Northern Guineas, leaving twelve runners to contest the mile “classic.” When betting ceased, Episode (£1596), Toxeuma (£1083), and Prodice (£1053) ' were best supported. The early leaders were Cashier, Toxeuma and Avon- ■: court, but along the back Toxeuma had taimen charge from Avoncourt, Cashier, Staghunter, White Wings, Episode, Gold Money and Te Atiawa. . Episode had gone to the front as they crossed the top, with White Wings, Gold Money, Toxeuma, Te Atiawa and - Cashier next. When they came into the straight, Gold Money was leading White Wings, Toxeuma, Prodice, Te Atiawa and Cashier, but halfway down the running, Prodice came through and got the Verdict by one and a-half lengths from Toxeuma, with Cashier half-a-length away in third place. Episode was fourth, with Staghunter, White Wings, Mithra, Sir Russell, Gold Money and Avoncourt next. Episode got on the heels of White Wings half a mile from home, and this materially affected the favourite’s chance. The sectional times were: First furlong j:,. 13 3-5 secs., two 25 l-ssec., three 36 ■ l-ssec., four 48 3-ssec, five 1.3. Te Atiawa and Hoariri were the only defections from the Shorts Handicap, in which the pool was a good one, with Aussie (£1887) in most - demand, the next best backed being Paganelli (£1464), and Benzora (£1195). Commendation played up at the post and took no part.in the race. Ballymoy, Second Aussie, Haiti, Freehold and Oration were first to show out, and led along the back, but Paganelli had taken charge as they crossed the top from Oration, Freehold and Kaiti. The order into the straight was Paganelli, Oration, Lady’s Boy, Benzora and Lysander, and in the run to the post Oration got the best of Paganelli, whom he beat by two lengths, with Benzora, who also finished well, one and a-half lengths away. Prince Otto was fourth, followed by Lysander, Kaiti, Lady’s Boy, Nancy Lee, Ballymoy Second, Freehold, Aussie and Master Doon. An inquiry was opened and adjourn- ’ ed until Monday in connection with the happenings. Aussie (Tinker) the favourite, drew number one at the barrier, but after jumping out smartly, got bumped back and was also again, pinched back near the thrsefurlong post. The Hawk was scratched for the Mitchelson Cup, leaving fourteen horses to face the starter. When the machine closed, the three, best backed candidates were Laughing Prince (£1395), Mask (£1249), and Star Stranger. Mint Leaf, Catkin, Sir Archie, <®Mal, Star Stranger, Te Kara and Valkon were left at the post and took no part in the race, the public being under the impression that it was a false start, and shouted to the riders of the horses that went away to pull up, but they continued on, and after the finish, the numbers of the placed horses were hoisted, and it was declared a race. Papatu, Transformer, Desert Glow, Mask,' Laughing Prince, Royal Mint and Queen Arch were the actual starters, and passed the stand in the above order. Along the back Transformer led from Papatu, Desert Glow and Laughing Prince. Crossing the top Transformer was attended by < Mask, Desert Glow, Queen Arch, Papatu and Laughing Prince. Desert Glow' i Was, first to turn for home, but Laugh- ( ing Prince beat him in the run to the 1 judge’s box by two lengths, with Mask 1 two and a-half lengths away. Royal Mint was fourth, with Papatu, Queen ( Arch and Transformer next. 6 Template was withdrawn from the 1 Hunters’ Steeples, for which Pompei- 1 us (£1173), was made favourite, witli ( Importer (£1023), and Master Arch s (£416) next in request. Tago San, 4
Clockwork, Marita, Roman Abbey and Mashoor were early leaders. Crossing the stand double, the order was Mashoor, Marita, Pompeius, Rafferty, and Importer. Mashoor was still m charge along the back with the order of the others unchanged. Going up the hill, Mashoor was twenty lengths in front of Marita and Pompeius, and when the straight was reached for the last time, the order was Mashoor, Cui Bono, Clockwork and Syndicate. Mashoor was well in front at the last fence, where an angry spectator tried to prevent him completing the course, but McGregor- got his mount past and scored an easy win from Cui Bono and Clockwork, whom the crowd also endeavoured to stop in the run to the judge’* box. Syndicate was fourth.

THE CUP DESCRIBED.
(Special to “Star.")
CHRISTCHURCH, October 6. The withdrawal of AVhite Sun, Travis, Axworthy, and Tramplast from the Methven Cup left a field plenty big enough to provide an interesting contest.
Quite fittingly it resulted in a capital contest. The betting was .remarkably even, Hackthorne and Linkman being the favourite selection, and a very little better backed than Real Liglit and Laplander. Krom the start. Hackthorne hit the front. He carried on past the stand from Denver’s Doll and Linkman. Royal Authoress pulled to the front at this stage, and soon had Hackthorn, Laplander, Beverley. Audubon, and Warepa as her nearest attendants, and at the end of the first round Great Triumph, Warepa, Royal Authoress, Hackthorn, Laplander and Firelight were racing in close order, but going down the back, Heml riksen shot Firelight to the front and proceeded to make the pace a' bit faster. He carried on round the top turn into the straight, Bay Nut put in a strong challenge. However, Firelight held a. length advantage until,,the post was reached. Laplander was close up. in third place, then came Kreisler and Linkman. Firelight raced like a. true! stayer, and was assisted a good deal by the driving of A. Henriksen. Royal Authoress was taken to the front, apparently with the idea of slowing up the field, but evidently Hendriksen knew the capabilities ol his pacer, as he made the pace for some wlho did not want it too fast, these tactics undoing a number, for.
though the majority stuck to him until the straight was reached, the most were very tired on reaching the winning post. Bay Nut, who was driven a, good race by his owner, T. H. McGirr, put up a good performance in threading his way through the big field. Laplander had every chance, but was simply not good enough. Kreisler, always well placed, lasted long enough to finish in front of a lot of very tired horses. Linkman went a fair race, without ever holding a winning chance. Mac Dillon raced well. Royal Serene and Sonoma Star lost a lot of ground at the start, but the latter showed plenty of speed once on the journey. Real Light may be improved by the race, and perhaps Warepa and Beverley Audubon may find a shorter distance to their liking.
AUSTRALIAN RACING.
BACCHUS WINS PLATE.
(Australian Press Association.)
SYDNEY, October 7. The A. J. C. Spring Meeting concluded at Randwick on Saturday in warm weather. The track was good. The attendance was 45,000. The racing lacked the interest of the prev-' ious three days of the meeting due to the absence of many of the highclass performers. Limerick was withdrawn from the Randwick Plate. This disappointed large numbers of racegoers, who were anxious to see a contest between the New Zealander and Winalot. Bacchus created a surprise by narrowly defeating Winalot in the Randwick Plate, while Ramulus, who went out favourite for the Clibborn Stakes, completely outclassed the opposition. The results were: —

Chandonia and Namearah led over the first jump from Mendit, Flipbern and Grey Knight. Racing away from the field, Chandonia and Nameerah established a forty lengths lead. At the foot of
the hill the last time round, Chandonia. lost its rider. At the next jump, a similar fate overcame Nameerah, thus leaving Grey Knight and Mailman to fight out the finish. Grey Knight prevailed by four lengths. .Time 6.351. Randwick Plate: —Bacchus 9.4, 1; Winalot 9.0, 2; Jocelyn 8.9, 3. The_ other starters were Spearfelt and Valamita.
