COBDEN NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.)

Loca l whitebait fish erm efl are not at all in accord with the recent weather, and to date no very large catches have been recorded. If, however, the whitebait fishers have not been successful, line fishermen report some good catches from about the tipliead, some good flat-fish being caught lately. The Town Board’s improvements in Newcastle Street are nearing completion, and it is hoped that before the workmen leave the job the footpath on the northern side of the street will be -given some attention. A few loads of gravel would be much appreciated by the large number of users of this side of the street.

The financial results of the recent Jubilee celebrations of the local school have been very favourably commented on by the parents of the scholars, and they' realise that most of the credit was due to the hard-working band of ladies who did most of the work in connection, with the various functions. To recognise their efforts the gentlemen of the district are tendering the lady workers a complimentary social and dance in the gymnasium next Friday night, when it is hoped that all parents will attend to show their appreciation of the work done by these ladies.

It is rumoured that shortly a meeting will be held to form a Scout Troop among the boys of Cobden. A newcomer to our district who has had considerable experience in the Scout movement in the North Island, is to be asked to take charge, and with astrong body in Cobden and another in Greymouth some good work and interesting competitions should be arranged between the two to their mutual advantage. At last evening’s service at the Church of the Resurrection, a beautiful new altar cross was unveiled, in memory of the late Mrs Caroline Gaskin'. There was a large congregation present, and hymns suitable to the occasion were sung, in addition to two sacred, solos, while the vicar, Rev. W. Bell, preached an appropriate sermon.
