DRAMA IN HOSPITAL

INTRUSION BY CRIMINALS. NEW YORK. September 19. Members of a gang of criminals today invaded a. hospital to rescue two of their comrades who were held prisoner. They killed the watchmen, but were repelled by nurses and attendants befoi;e they could reach the room in which the prisoners were locked. James Ward was arrested recently and broke his leg while he was trying to escape from the police, who were chasing burglars. He and another injured man were confined to the hospital. Just after daylight three criminals, with sawn-off shotguns, suddenly appeared in the corridor shouting and firing and trying to intimidate the nurses.

A patrolman named Brosnan was killed by the first volley, but not until he had locked the prisoners behind heavy doors. Police and fire patrols were quickly called. They rushed to the hospital. Within two minutes the intruders had fled through rear doors.
