BALL’S HEAD ROUGH TRIP

(Special to “Star.”)

AUCKLAND, October 1.

An exceptionally long trip of nearb r six days from Greymouth to Auckland, was made by the Union Company’s steamer Balls Head, which reached Auckland on Saturday morning. The vessel sailed from Greymouth on the previous Sunday afternoon, and as soon as she cleared port, stormy weather was encountered. For four days, the Balls Head was severely buffeted by a succession of gales, with the wind varying from north-west to west and south-west. The seas repeatedly broke on board, and the decks were continually flooded. Off Cape Egmont on Wednesday, the vessel 'had to be hove to for 12 hours. The stormy weather continued until the steamer reached Cape Maria Van Dieman at 2 o’clock on Friday morning. Afterwards, conditions improved and better progress was made to port. The only damage done to the vessel was to the steam pipes and pipe casings, which were broken when the decks were flooded.
