CII&ISTCHURCH TEAM WIN.
(Special to “Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, September 30. The Premier Rugby League Club teams of Canterbury and the West Coast played for the Thacker Shield at MbnicU Park on Saturday afternoon. Both teams, Christchurch Marist and Qireymouth Marist, were the winners of the knockout competitions in their respective provinces, and the match was the outcome of a challenge from Greymouth Marist to the holders of the Shield. There was another senior grade match at the Park between teams from Sydenham and Kaikorai (Dunedin) clubs. There was a very large attendance.

A fbw minutes after the commencement of play Burns and Dobbs dribbled through to the line from midfield. The ball bounced against the Coast fullback into the arms of Burns, who dived across for a try. Bond failed to convert. Christchurch Marist 3, West Coast Marist 0. Then Robins sent Coast backs away, but Brown, t'he winger, failed to take his pass. From a penalty E. Quinn juSt failed with a long shot at goal. Doogan made a fine ground-gaining run, but was tackled in possession. Burns punted downfield, and Pearce, folldWing up fast gathered in the ball, but touched down over the dead ball line. Then from a scrum in Coast twenty-five Clarkson tthrew a long pass to Spillane, who let out to Brit-| tenden, the last named transferring to Pearce, who scorched over at the corner to score a brilliant try. Bond's kick failed. Christchurch 6, West Coast 0.
The home backs again handled in turn, but Brittenden was downed. Fast following up by podds nearly resulted in a try, but Kennedy won in the the touch down. Both teams were throwing the ball about in fine style and play was fast and exciting. From a scrum in Christchurch twenty-nye, O’Malley threw out a long pass and clever passing between Doogan and Robins ended in the Coast captain grounding the ball under the . posts. Quinn failed with the easiest of kicks. Christchurch 6, West Coast 3. A fine rush by Clarkson, Spillane and Hanrahan, resulted in the last named scoring,. Brittenden converted. Christchurch 11, West Coast 3. A dangerous counter attack by the visitors was stopped by solid tackling, dust before half-time Quinn kicked a goal from a penalty, the half time scores being, Christchurch • 11, West Coiist 5. Play had been in progress in the second spoil only a few minutes when the Coast backs staged a brilliant passing bout Robins being well tackled. A counter movement by Christchurch saw Pearce gain possession and streak down the line, but his pass in-field to Dobbs was not accepted. Christchurch pressed and play was carried to Coast line, but an infringement spoila' good scoring opportunity. A moment later the Christchurch backs handled in turn for Bond to score a good try. Britten added the major points. Christchurch 16, West Coast 5.
Christchurch continued to press, and from a scrum hear the Coast line Clarkson shot round to score. Pearce failed to convert. Christchurch 19, West Coast 5. Then from loose play about half way Brown gathered in the ball and passed to O’Loughlin who just evaded McKendry’s tackle, and touched down for a try. Quinn failed, to goal. Christchurch 19, West Coast 8. Christchurch were next penalised and Robins kicked a beautiful goal. Christchurch 19, West Coast' 10. Then from scrambling in the corner Dobbs picked up and dodged across. Bond missed with the kick. Christchurch 22, West Coast 10. The Coast vanguard dribbled play well down, and found the defenders out of position, when Doogan secured and crossed under the posts. He missed the kick. Christchurch 22, West Coast 13. The game was being played at a cracking pace. Play travelled up and ■ down the field in brilliant style. Then from midfield O’Loughlin made a great run, but was overhauled. R. Quinn accepted the pass but could not get over, and a melee on the line ended in Christchurch clearing. In a handy position Spillane made a good but unsuccessful attempt at goal and the game ended with West Coast on attack. The final scores were, Christchurch Marist 22, West Coast * Marist 13. The referee was Mr H. W. Lawrence. West Coast Marist third graders defeated Sydenham by 11 points to 4. For the winners, Beban (2), and Higgins scored, while the latter also converted a try. For Sydenham, C. Campbell kicked two penalty goals.
BLACKBALL V. NELSON CREEK Blackball met Nelson Creek in a Bradshaw Cup game yesterday al Blackball, in ideal weather before a large crowd of spectators including many car-loads of Creek partisans. Dodds started the game on Blackball’s behalf. Greer returned the leather to midfield, but offside against Fisher saw Blackball decide to have a scrum at Creek 25 line. Dodds received but booted out on the full. Later Gray and Rogers dribbled the ball into Creek quarters, Calder saving well. Dodds punted high to Williams who sent out Of bounds. Blackball assumed the offensive. Dodds put in a long kick which Williams (Creek) failed to gather in, and Caldwell following up well secured the ball arid went over in a good position. Dodds, however, failed to augment the score from an easy goal shot. Blackball 3 —Creek 0. Creek pressed hard for a time, but the home team defended well and O’Brien being detected offside saw Dodds find the line at midfield from the resultant kick. A good passing movement by O’Brien and Fisher saw the latter almost over, Clunan bringing him down on the line. Caldwell, later relieved the situation by a timely mark, when hard pressed. Another passing movement by Creek backs carried play once more to the home line, and from a scrum close In Kennedy crossed in a position, but Greer failed at
goal. Blackball 3—Creek 3. Creek came again and Nelson being offside, Calder essayed a long range shot at goal, the ball passing underneath the cross-bar. Later passing by Bennett, Sadler and O’Brien saw the Creek once more battling hard on the Blackball line, and weak tackling by the home backs saw Calder force his way over for a further try for Creek. The same player failed at goal, the score now reading: Creek 6 —Blackball 3. Resuming, Greer marked to save from Caldwell, who had followed up well, and O’Brien getting offside, saw a scrum formed at Creek 25 line. Dodds later punted to Calder who dummied his way to the home line, before finally being brought down by Clunan. A passing movement by Dodds and Gray saw the latter hang on far too long. Creek forced play to the home 25 line again. Caldwell sending out on the full to save, pater Williams came through nicely for Creek, and the backs taking up the movement finally saw Sadler go over at the corner. Greer failed to augment the score from the goal kick. Creek 9 —Blackball 3. Offside against
Helem and Fisher saw Caldwell with a hefty kick find the line at Creek 25 flag. Blackball pressed hard for a time, Caldwell failing at goal from a penalty kick awarded right in-front of the posts. Passing by Creek returned
the play to Blackball territory but obstruction against Brownlie sent them back again to their own quarters. Creek returned and were attacking hard when the half-time whistle sounded with the scores: Nelson Creek 9 —Blackball 3.
O’Brien restarted for Creek, Dodds bejng tackled in possession before he could reply. Dodds later broke through nicely but lacked .support when a favourable opportunity presented itself. Blackball assailed the Creek line, Helem sending out on full to save. Haisty received and attempted to pot a goal when a “pass out” to his colleagues would have been more beneficial to his side. Creek once more carried play into Blackball quarters, Tobin being almost over being grassed oh the line by Clunan. Blackball forwards later brought play back again to Creek 25 line, and Gray followed up a kick and gathering in the ball, raced | over close in, Caldwell piloting the ball over the bar for goal points. Creek 9 —Blackball 8. Hereabouts Greer was temporarily Jaid out in a tackle, but resumed after attention. Give and .take play with long range kicking duels by the respective' backs ensued at midfield for a time, until Creek were awarded a penalty kick, from which i Calder found the line at the home corner flag, the ball eventually going over the dead-ball line. Blackball later returned to the attack. Dodds booting out on the full, the home forwards secured possession from the scrum and
a good passing .movement carried play to Creek line, Hudson scoring, but the points were nullified for offside play. Creek later returned to Blackball end, O’Brien scoring. Bennett failed at goal. Creek 12 —Blackball 8. A few minutes later bustling play by Creek forwards saw Calder go over under the posts. Greer adding goal points. Creek 17 —- Blackball 8. Resuming, Creek soon added further points, Greer racing over for Calder to add the goal points. Creek 22— Blackball 8. At this stage of the game, there appeared to be only one team in the hunt and it certainly was not Blackball. A knock-on by Calder nullified another scoring chance for Creek. Blackball made a spasmodic breakaway to midfield, but Creek returned again, Fisher racing over from Blackball 25 line, Greer failing at goal. Creek 25, Blackball 8. Williams later put in a neat run for Creek at the expense of having his jersey torn from his back.. Tobin latei’ being bowled over on the home line when almost over. Creek continued to press. Kennedy scoring, Helem missing the goal. Brownlie later added a further try for Creek. Williams converting. The final score being: Nelson Creek 33, Blackball 8. Mr. Jas. JUNIOR GAMES Blackball Juniors met Runanga Juniors in a challenge cup game prior to the Senior game, and emerged triumphant by 22 points to 3. Jas. Kerr (2), Clark (2), S. Kerr and Schafer, were the try-getters for Blackball, while Olliver and Gray added goals. The visitors’ -only score was an unconverted try. NGAHERE 9—NELSON CREEK 5 Ngahere beat Nelson Creek yesterday at Cobden, in the Junior KnockOut Cup, by 9 points to 5. A good crowd of spectators saw an interesting and close game played under splendid conditions. At half-time Creek led by 5 points to 3, but' in the last spell Ngahere gained the lead with desperate efforts and won the game. Donaldson, a Ngahere player shone throughout the play, handling and running in g’rear. style. The scorers were J. Donaldson, Mayne and Ross for Ngahere, and Knelem for Creek, Tibbles converting. Mr. C. Dewar refereed.
MARIST 18 v. WAIUTA 8
At Waiuta, in a friendly encounter, Marist Juniors defeated the home juniors by 18 points to 8. A good crowd saw one of the finest games of League seen, at Waiuta.
Waiuta Rover Seniors defeated Mawheraiti seniors by 44 points to 13.
