UNEMPLOYMENT.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Unemployment is a matter giving much concern at the present Sime, and it would be a poor type oi person who gloated over the fact that many workers are hard pressed to find either work or food. The deputation which approached the .Grey Hospital Board with requests for aid whilst unemployed, owing to reduction of labour requirements in the Blackball mines, has inclined me to state a few facts wlhich give room for thought. History is a subject which many people consider should, not be taught, some almost hold the view it should be obliterated, the writer is not one of them. About two decades ago, work in the coal mines was plentiful ana the employer found difficulty in obtaining suitable labour, yet on a Satxirday evening we had the spectacle of processions of workers with floating banners and frothy orators of the soap box type advocating the destruction of capital and condemning things in general. The growth of worldly affairs with some of those speakers has sincs that time been of such a nature as to qualify them for the bloated capitalist brigade. As far as investment of capital by the bloated capitalist of this Coast is concerned, it seems he is well destroyed, for if it was not for outside investors there certainly would be few ventures started. It is to be hoped the future results will at least return their capital, even if good interest is not fprthcoming.

Tn the “Blackball Notes” of your issue of the “Star” last night it stated there was to be a procession, headed by bands, to take place in Greymouth today. Some of the ancients might hear more reasonable solutions of momentous questions on this occasion than were laid down for guidance on the previous processions mentioned above. — f am, etc., COASTER.
