Lord Melchett (formerly Sir Alfred Mond) has arrived here. In an interview, he defended his programme of mergers. He said that it had been his ambition to develop the British Empire as a single, vast economic unit, and to foster industrial co-operation.
TURKEY’S ALPHABET

■ Tho Times’s correspondent at Conistantinople, says that the whole of Turkey, except the “diehards” of certain religious elements, and those otherwise hostile to learning, are adopting the new alphabet, in which all newspapers will be printed.

After consultation with the Red Cross, the Government announced a .25,000 dollars subscription for the British West Indies hurricane relief. “There is no foundation for the charge made by Bishop Lloyd here on Wednesday, that there had been a deliberate attempt to keep Britishers from Canada,” said the Minister for Immigration (Mr. Forke). “We are doing everything possible to bring to Canada Britishers willing and capable to work on farms.”
