COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING

REEFTON, September 28. The regular monthly meeting of the Inangahua County Council was held yesterday. Present: Messrs W. Clayton (chairman), Auld, Byrne, Panckhurst, Blackadder, O’Regan, Paine. Jinward correspondence was dealt with as follows :—■ From AV. Gore Porter, enclosing letters from the Secretary of the Nelson Acclimatisation Society on matter of stocking Lake Daniel with trout. —Left in the hands of the Engineer and Mr W. Blackadder. From Liquidator of Ferndale Timaru Coal Co., Ltd. (in liquidation) re rates and rents due by the company. —Resolved that offer of liquidator be acaccepted. From .Guinness and Kitchirigham re rates due by Quinn’s Estate and Blyth Bros. —No action taken in the matter in either case. From Boatmans Consolidated Gold Mines, Ltd. (in liquidation), application for a reduction in rent to 2/6 per acre for a period of one year from July 1, 1928, over special claims Nos. 2555, 2575, 2576, 2880, 3001, and 3322.—Previous resolutions to be rescinded by a unanimous vote of the Council and request be granted. From Mines Department advising that J. A. Morris 'has been granted a reduction in rent to 2/6 per acre per annum for 12 months from January, 1928, over special claims Nos. 1976 and 2909. From Medical Officer of Health re the appointment of Departmental Inspectors as sanitary inspectors to local authorities. —Formal resolution carried, Cr O’Regan dissenting. From Palmerston North Borough Council re hospital treatment. —No action taken. From District Engineer of New Zealand Railways advising that the erection of a benzine store at Ikamatua Station is considered unnecessary. From District Traffic Manager New Zealand Railways re daily service between Reefton and Inangahua Junction, that the traffic does not warrant same.

From Greymouth Motors, Ltd. re 30cwt.' Ford truck chassis and S. Austin re same. —To be purchased. From the Precision Engineering Co. re signposts for highways.—County Engineer to communicate with the Public Works Engineer re matter. From Mr John Pearce asking to have premises connected with sewerage.— Left to Engineer. Engineer’s report: —Notice, to be erected at Maruia Springs that no buildings are to be erected without the authority of the County Council. That the Public- Works Department be requested to hurry the construction of Crichton’s Bridge as the ropes for the same have been delivered. Sexton’s report:—Six interments

were reported for' the month. The matter of forwarding £3 to the Plunket Society at Greymouth was held over. Resolved that the Engineer be instructed to attend to the heap of rubbish in the middle of the street. En-

gineer to go into the matter of supplementing the town water supply, and the water supply head race be examined from the reservoir to the intake. That the Public Works Department be again approached for a grant of £lOO for urgent repairs to Hukuwai Road, and that application be made for road access to Waiuta Post Office. That Cemetery Creek be cleaned out. That repairs be effected to Gibbs Road, Maruia. That this County co-operate with the Murchison County Council, asking the Public Works Department at Nelson to provide road access to Crichton’s homestead at Maruia. That the Railway Department be written to again re drafting yards for stock at the Reefton Station. That the Chairman and committee of Council and Engineer visit the scene of erosion at Brazil’s farm. That the Buller County Council be written to regarding particulars of their superannuation scheme for County employees. That the Highways' Board be written to asking for the construction of a drain on both sides of the road at Yorky’s Creek.

From District Engineer, Public Works Department, advising that he ’has recommended Pascoe’s Road, and road at Winstanley’s, Inangahua Junction, for inclusion in the Supplementary Estimates. From District Engineer, Public Works Department, on matter of grant for Coal Creek Bridge.—Amount of grant increased from £l5O to £3OO per year.

From County Solicitor on matter of Riding representation.--—Matter to h® left as at present. From Buller County Council re river erosion.—County to co-operate with the Buller County in the matter. From S. Vivian, asking for assistance

towards protecting his property from erosion by Landing Creek, and offering labour for same. —Left to the Engineer 'to visit the place and report at next meeting. From Jas. O’Regan, drawing attention for the need of repairs to the Old Landing track leading to his property. —Referred to Engineer. From Alexander Mines, Ltd., asking for repairs to road from Absalom’s Iplace, in Snowy Creek, to its Snowy Creek stables. —Referred to Engineer. From Smith and Watson, applying for rope and chair to cross the river to Fletcher’s. —Referred to the Engineer to report. From I. Patterson, re transfer of Ferry Reserve Lease from M. A. Edgar to C. E. Jackson, accompanied by deeds of assignment and lease. —Council agree to transfer.

From R. M. Hempseed, asking for repairs to pack track to Alexander, via Snowy Creek.—-Left to Engineer with power to act.

HOSPITAL BOARD MEETING

REEFTON, September 28. The monthly meeting of the Inangahua. Hospital Board was held last evening, there being present Messrs J. B. Auld (chairman), F. W Seawright, W.‘Blackadder, E. I. Paine, G. B. Mclnroe, J. O. Byrne, J. O’Regum H. 11. Ord, secretary Wainla Min-

ers’ Medical Association wrote re waiting room at Waiuta Cottage Hospital and stating they intended Io launch a grand bazaaz in aid of scheme to provide a waiting room and dental clinic, and that they will submit plans and specifications for Board’s approval and soliciting assistance by way of grant.

Tho chairman said they had no provision on the estimates for such a building this year. He pointed out that the Waiuta Hospital had gone behind some considerable amount during the past seven years.

In reply to Mr Byrne the secretary said that any building put on the

Board’s property would become the property of the Board. Mr Byrne said he did not approve of letting a cottage* to any private person.

It was resolved that the secretary inform the Waiuta Medical Association that the Board is unable to contribute to the proposed building. Mr Mclnroe moved the matter of installing light at Waiuta be left to the chairman, Messrs Byrne and Seawright, and the secretary to attend to.—Seconded by Mr Byrne. Mr O’Regan moved as an amendment that the Medical Superintendent and his assistant be consulted. This, was not seconded. The motion was put and carried.

The North Canterbury Hospital Board wrote re raffling the silken Hags brought over in the Southern Cross, one-half of the proceeds to go to Sydney Hospital and the other half to the four main hospitals in New Zealand, and inviting the Inangahua’s Board’s co-operation in'the distribution of tickets.—The secretary stated that ho had replied that, seeing that the only Board’s to benefit were the four main hospitals, he could not recommend support. —The Secretary’s' reply was endorsed. Mr Paine moved that the proposed regulations as submitted be adopted, and submitted to the Director-General of Health. —Seconded by Mr Mclnroe. Mr Seawright said that under a clause of the Act, the Board was empowered to draw up such regulations. The chairman thought these should be submitted to the Director-General of Hospitals. In reply to Mr O’Regan, the-Secre-tary stated this applied to Reefton Hospital only. The motion was put and carried.

Tenders for the Maternity Ward building were- opened as follows —J. B. McMyn, Reefton, £1279/12/-; F. and T. Sotheran, Greymouth, £1,455; Gordon Patterson, Greymouth, £1,252/ 10/-; Wm. McDougall, Greymouth, £1,322/18/6; Alan Wells, Reefton £1,182/15/-; Absolom & Evans, Reefton £l2Bl/11/1. Mr. O’Regan moved that McMyn’s tender be accepted. —Not seconded. Mr. Mclnroe moved that Mr. Wells’ tender be'accepted.—Seconded by Mr. Paine and carried. The Chairman moved that Mr. McMyn be supervisor.—Mr. Seawright seconded.

Mr. O’Regan moved that the Medical Superintendent be supervisor. Mr. Byrne suggested that it be left in the hands of the Town members to appoint a supervisor. - Mr. Blackadder supported Mr. McMyn as supervisor. Mr. Byrne moved that Mr. Patterson be appointed. Mr. O’Regan moved that this matter stand over. He wanted to point out that a lot of ratepayers were interested and he wanted to have this huge expenditure authorised. The Chairman said this work was authorised by a full meeting of the Board. Mr. O’Regan moved thht applications for the position of supervisor be called at 25 per cent. —Seconded by Mi< Mclnroe. In reply to a question the chairman said lie understood the cost of supervision was 25 per cent. The amendment was put and declared carried by four votes to three.
