AMUSEMENTS

OPERA HOUSE

“The World at Her Feet” seems destined to do exactly that for Florence Vidor as those who have already seen the film are still engaged in heaping flowery adjectives on it. “The orchid lady of the screen” appears as a woman lawyer. She and hubby are quite happy until a sudden abundance of money gives him an urge to retire. Jane decides to continue her professional career. No one is surprised when “the world and his wife lay their troubles at her feet.” The story will be unfolded at the Opera House tonight. “THE IRRESISTIBLE LOVER.” Love, we are told, is what makes the world go round. J. Harrison Grey heard the platitude. Young, handsome and wealthy, he had nothing to keep him from experimenting with the hearts of blondes, brunettes, redheads and the in-betweens. The picture has been booked to be shown at the Opera House to-morrow night. The starring roles are divided between Lois Moran and Norman Kerry.

GREYMOUTH JAZZ CLUB

The Greymouth Jazz Club is holding its opening dance in the United Pavilion on. Tuesday, October 2. The object of the dances is to yaise funds and pave the way for the formation of a, Cabaret and Jazz Club, part of the profits of which will be devoted to deserving institutions in the town. The organisers consider that the time has come when jazz should play a more prominent part in the town’s programme of amusement, and feel sure that this innovation will meet with the support of lovers of modern dancing. The orchestra of seven instruments has obtained the latest music direct from Australia, and is making a special endeavour to ensure satisfaction. POSTER BALL The organisers of the Poster Ball desire to acknowledge various donations from firms unable to send a representative to take part in the grand march: U.S.S. Coy. (per W. B. Cunningham), Messrs Keating Bros. Painter’s, Chemist; Empire Hotel; H. Bruhn, Wanganui Butchery; Moss & Co.; Keddie’s; Blocksage’s; Stratford & Blair; “Argus”, W. Greenhill; Seymour’s Fruit Mart; Baty’s Garage. Donation of goods from following also acknowledged: Messrs Robertson’s, Blocksage, Riordan (Bakers), West Coast Farmers, Mrs. Milligan. Through an oversight Bond’s Wonderland Firm did not appear in the report as among firms in costume. Miss A. Outraxn as “Yates Seeds” appeared on their behalf. Miss Wood represented Mrs. E. Trott of Cobden, Haberdashery and Hosiery.
