CHRISTCHURCH, September 26. There were somewhat larger yardings of fat cattle and'fat and store sheep at Addington to-day. The beef supply was considerably added to by lines from the North Island, and the quality was, on the whole, exceptionally good. There was a steady demand at late rates. There was a fairly firm sale for prime fat sheep, but other classes were inclined to be easier. Store sheep met with a dull demand and prices showed a decline. Store Sheep.—There was a rather larger entry of store sheep. Except for a few lines of young wethers, the quality was not attractive. The sale was dragging, and dry sheep were down in some cases 1/6 per head, and ewes and lambs were about 1/ below the previous week’s rates. The range of prices was —Good half-bred wethers 32/ to 34/6, others 25/6 to 27/3, shorn wethers to 27/6, ewes and lambs 16/ to 10/6 (all counted), three-quarter-bred ewe hoggets to 27/6, half-bred wether hoggets 23/6 to 26/, backward mixed sex hoggets 18/ to 20/6. Spring Lambs : There was an entry of 84 spring lambs, the supply being beyond butchers’ requirements,, and prices were lower by several shillings per head, and ranged from 35/ to 40/4 for the larger lambs am) 27/ to 34/6 for the smaller.

There was a fair proportion of prime sheep in a good yarding of fats, aixd generally the market was somewhat irregular. Prime sheep showed practically no change, but big sheep not well finished and light wethers suitable for shearing were also a little easier. The decline. in cases represented 1/ to 1/6 per head. The range of prices was - Extra prime -wethers to 52/4, prime heavy wethers 43/ to 48/, prime medium weight wethers 37/6 to 42/, medium wethers 32/ to 35/, shorn wethers 26/4 to 36/4, extra prime ewes to 47/4, prime ewes 36/ to 41/, medium ewes 28/6 to 34/, aged and inferior ewes 26/10 to 28/. Fat cattle numbered 457 head and included very prime lines of Herefords, Polled Angus and Hereford crosses and purebred Polled Angus. The West Coast was also well represented. The yarding was one of the best for quality that has been offered for some time. The sale throughout was very sound, and although there was some irregularity shown, there was little or no quotable change from the previous week’s rates. Choice steer and heifer beef may be quoted up to 52/ per lOOlbs, average prime beef 44/ to 48/,, medium quality 39/6 to 42/6, plain heavy steer 35/ to 40/, prime cow and heifer 45/ to 47/6, medium 39/ to 41/6, and rough down to 30/. The range of prices was : —Extra prime steers to £23 7/6, prime steers £lB 10/ to £2l 10/, medium steers £l6 10/ to £lB, ordinary steers £l3 7/6 to £l6, extra, prime heifers to £l6 12/6, prime heifers £l4 to £l6, ordinary heifers £9 17/6 to £l3 10/, extra prime cows to £l9 2/6, prime cows £l3 to £l6 10/, medium cows £9 10/ to £l2 10/, aged and inferior cows £6 2/6 to £9. There was a large entry in vealers’ pens, about three-fourths being young calves, the proportion of the larger sorts being the smallest since last season. Prices were easier than those of the previous week. - Values were: Twelve to eighteen months’ sorts £B, 10/, good vealers £6 to £7 15/, medium vealers £3 to £5 10/, small calves 17/6 to £2 5/. There was a fairly large yarding of; store cattle, made up chiefly of cows, with a few small lots of heifers, and most of the offering was low in condition. Good cows £5 to £7 17/, medium cows £3 5/ to £4 10/, inferior cows 20/ to £2 15/. There was an entry of 81 head of dairy cattle, the majority of which were in poor condition. Best second, third and fourth calves £9 to £l2, medium sorts £6 10/ to £8 10/, inferior and backward £4 to £6, extra good heifers to £l3, others £5 5/ to £8 10/. There was a large entry of porkers, and a medium one of baconers. The range of prices was: Choppers to £5 16/6, light baconers £3 7/6 to £4, heavy baconers £4 5/ to £4 15/, extra heavy to £5 5/, average price per lb to 7d, light porkers 35/ to 47/6, heavy porkers 52/6 to 58/6, average price per lb 6/>d to 7 2 L d. A very large yarding of store pigs sold at slightly easier rates. Values were: Small weaners 6/- to 8/, good weaners 9/ to 12/, good stores 13/ to 16/, medium 17/ to 22/, large stores 24/ to 34/.
