RUGBY FOOTBALL

WAIRARAPA V. WARATAHS.

(Preea Association.)

MASTERTON, September 2G. The final match of the New South Wales tour was against Wairarapa, and was played to-day in driving and heavy rain showers, which marred the play considerably. The home pack was better than the visitors, and Wairarapa won by 17 to 10. The New South Wales team’s movements were nippy, and it was only the treacherous conditions that prevented them developing on spectacular lines. Wairarapa, playing with the wind and rain behind them in the first spell, had the visitors mainly on the defensive, and did most of their scoring before half time, when the tally was: Wairarapa 14; New South Wales 5. For Wairarapa, Jury (2), and Yates scored tries, one being converted by Cundy, who also kicked two penalty goals’ For New South Wales, Louden and Croft scored tries, both being converted by Croft. Mr C. E. Morgan, manager of the New South Wales Rugby team, at the conclusion of the Wairarapa game, said he wished to thank the public of New Zealand and Union officials for the wonderful inception accorded the team at all centres. He wished specially to thank the Maoris for their cordial reception. The tour, he said, was far more successful than his team had anticipated, and proved that Rugby was not dormant in his State.
