Mr C. Undrill, Railway stationmaster at Springfield, arrived on Saturday at Greymouth.

Mi* H. Bowman, of the Wellington Post Office staff, arrived on Saturday on a visit to his mother.

A Wellington message stated that the United Political Party to-day chose Sir Joseph Ward as their leader.

The re-appointment of Mix William Clayton (Ahaura), as a member of the Westland Land Board, appears in the N.Z. Gazette for September 13.

The death is announced from Christchurch of Mr Thomas Leonard Cowlishaw, aged 55 years, formerly a wellknown Canterbury rowing man and footballer. —Press Assn.

Mr E. F. Healy, previously announced as Liberal-Labour candidate for the Wairau seat at the general election has received the imprimateur of the United Party.—Press Assn.

The death is announced from Christchurch of Mr William Walton, 8.A., aged 72, formerly mastei- at Christchurch Boys’ High School, and assis-tant-master at Wellington College.

The engagement is announced of Miss Marie Winifred Tremellyn, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs W. H. Parfitt, of Devon Street, Greymouth, to Mr Neil Haldane Ames, of Greymouth.

' Rev. W. Bell, Vicar of Cobden, who was offered the incumbency of the parish of, Reefton, rendered vacant through the transfer of Rev. J. W. Bloyce to Westport, has intimated his intention of declining the offer.

’ An Ottawa cablegram stated that Miss Margaret Fleming, daughter of Mr and Mrs Hugh Fleming. Ottawa, and granddaughter of Sir Sandford Fleming, railroad magnate, on Saturday became the bride of the fourth Viscount Hardinge.

A London cablegram stated that Captain F. Hemming has retired from the New Zealand Shipping Company’s service. He has voyaged over-three million miles, including one million miles during fifteen years in the Waiwera, and eight hundred thousand miles as captain of the Rimutaka. /

The death occurred at Christchurch on Friday of Mr George Edmond Crooks, aged 43 years. Deceased, who had been in ill-health for some time, was the/third son of Mrs W. Crooks, of Ashburton, and a brother of Mi’ J. Crooks, of Greymouth. The latter left for Christchurch on Saturday.

At Government House, this morning the Governor-General presented Hon. Sir Apirana Ngata, with letters patent under His Majesty’s sign manual conferring upon him the dignity of a Knight Bachelor. He also presented \ Major. J. L. Saunders, and Bandmaster T. Herd, with the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers’ decoration. —Press Association.

At the Greymouth Technical School on Friday afternoon, members of the staff met to make a presentation to Messrs AV. B. Hutton and L. Clarke, two of their number wlio have recently been married. Mr J. Hutton (the Principal) tendered'to them the congratulations and good wishes of the staff, on behalf of whom he presented Mr W. B. Hutton with a valuable cake stand, and Mr L. Clarke with a beautiful salad bowl. The recipients appropriately responded. The death occurred at Gisborne on Saturday bf Mrs Martha Thompson Jones, wife of Chief Judge Jones, of the 'Native Land Court and Undersecretary of Native Affiairs. The deceased was a well-known social worker in the Gisborne district, but her health broke down during the war period, when she devoted considerable energies to work for the soldiers. Two sons were lost in the war. Deceased leaves three * daughters—Mesdames Curran (Gisborne), W. Smith (Templeton, Canterbury), and Miss Joyce Jones (disborne), and one son, Mr C. G. Jones, of Gisborne.. , s Selected as Labour’s candidate for Timaru, and appointed as Labour Organiser at Dunedin by the L.R.C., Rev. Clyde Carr, member of th§ Christchurch City Council and Canterbury Hospital Board, resigned on Saturday ' his position as announcer at radio station 3YA Christchurch. In addition to his usual work as announcer at 3YA, Mr Carr has filled the role of Uncle Sam at the children’s sessions. It is not Mr Carr’s intention to resign from the City Council or the North Canterbury Hospital Board. He stated on Saturday that he will attend as many meeting of these bodies as possible.—Press Assn.

The death occurred this morning of Mr. Thomas Casey, at the residence ; of his sister, Mrs. Spencer, South 'Beach. ' The late Mr. Casey, who was a native of County Limerick, Ireland, was one of tile eai-ly pioneers to reach these shores, and had attained the age of 86 years. Leaving Ireland when quite a lad, he arrived in Victoria in 1861. He following mining therfe for some years, subsequently ' coming to the Coast 1 on the outbreak of the gold rush, and working at Hokitika and surrounding mining districts. He also followed mining in. .Reefton for a time, subsequently returning to Australia. About seven years ago he returned to the Coast, and resided with his sister at South Beach, enjoying good health until a few weeks ago. The funeral will take place to-morrow (Tuesday)., leaving the residence of Mrs. Spencer, South’Beach, at 2 o’clock, for Karoro Cemetery.
