AMERICAN SINGLES.

Australian Press Assn. —United Service.) (By Cable—Press Assn—Copyright.)

NEW YORK, September 15.

At Forest Hills, Cochet defeated Frank Shields (New York) 6/4, 8/6, 6/4, and Hunter defeated Lott; 6/8, 6/4, 6/3, 6/4, in the semi-finals. “The bringing together of Cochet and Hunter in the final of the national singles favours the Frenchman to take the championship back with him. He was never in danger throughout the tournament. The younger American players could win a set from him, but ho was a stonewall, against which all offence broke. His match with Shields in the Semi-final was an illustration. Shields is the junior American champion, and will be heard from in coming years. He played a brave game against Cochet, but could not win. He was leading 5-1 in the second set, and stood at match point in the seventh game, but Cochet brought the set score to deuce, and with an all-round repertoire of splendid- shots, won it.

Hunter’s defeat of Lott was in the nature of an upset, for Hunter’s showing this year has not been very good. Lott, however, is too temperamental to bo a predictable factor. Some 13,000 saw the match to-day, and were hardly fair to Cochet. They would applaud tremendously when Shields came to serve, and when Cochet served he was seriously disturbed by the shouts of encouragement to the American. The spectators hurled cushions into the arena at the conclusion to express their dissatisfaction. TILDEN’S REINSTATEMENT. ■■ ■ " ■ • NEW YORK, September 15. News from Forest Hills states it is learned that Tilden has applied for reinstatement as an amateur. The opinion is expressed that favourable action is unlikely by the United States Lawn Tennis Association, which tonight decided to table the application until the next meeting.
