HOKITIKA, September 15.

On Thursday afternoon a party of 20 boys from Standards V. VI. from the State school were conveyed to the Hatchery at Lake Kanieri, and there Mr A. C. Armstrong explained to them the work of the 2kcclina.a,tisation Society, and the hatching out of fish, and asked the lads to protect the native birds. Mr Armstrong’s address was very interesting and the lads showed a keen interest in the work of the Association. The cost of conveyance of the boys was borne by the Acclimatisation Society. Mr J. H. Harkness, Mayor of Westport, was a visitor to Hokitika on Thursday last. He returned home on Friday. At the -Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (before Mr Meldrum, S.M.), Louis Reid was charged with the theft of electricity, the property of Kanieri Electric Ltd., of a value of £2B 3/4. Mr Elcock appeared for defendant who pleaded not guilty, and elected to be dealt with summarily.

Sergt. King said the charge was laid under Section 222 of the Justices of the Peace Act, 1902. The defendant was engaged in business in Revell Street in which electric power was installed. The Company had put a check on the two meters in the shop. This was a meter erected on the pole outside the shop. It was found the inside meters had been interfered with by means of a bridge, that had prevented the meters from registering.Mr Meldrum, in giving judgment, said it was proved that defendant had used a bridge that had the effect of preventing the meter recording the current used. Defendant stated he had only used it on one occasion. It was’ a perfectly clear case. Defendant would be convicted and fined £2O, with witnesses’ expenses £2 2/-. At the request of counsel four months was allowed for payment at £5 per month. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Borough Council met last evening; present: Mi’ G.'Perry (Mayor), Crs. T. W. Duff, E. W. Heenan, G. Heinz, A. C. Armstrong, Jas. King, Teichelman, D. J. Evans. Apologies were received for the absence of Crs. Jeffries and Elcock. The District Telegraph Engineer, Christchurch, wrote soliciting the assistance of local bodies in the matter of ensuring that drainlayers and others, obtaining permits for excavation Work, have specially brought under their notice the necessity for examining this Department’s cabling and duct plans before commencing work, which might interfere with underground telephone system.

The Secretary, Westland Racing Club, applied for extension of water service to back *of racecourse for fire purposes.—Request granted. The Secretary of the Beautifying Association forwarded £lO,. balance towards forming footpath around Cass Square. w Messrs A. H. Lawn and M. Houston waited on the Council respecting the swimming baths. Mr Houston said there was some serious leakage in the bath. The surface required cementing. gU tlie shallow end the concrete was very rough and caused the children to hurt .their hands and feet. Mr Houston stated that the Club had spent a considerable amount on the bath and spend all their earnings on them. An estimate of the cost has been obtained. It was decided that the Council spend up to £5O on the baths and that a report and estimate be furnished by the Borough overseer. The Council referred to the splendid work done by the Swimming Club, in the past. The treasurer reported receipts amounting to £216 17/1, payments £466 1/4, credit balance £205 11/3. •Accounts amounting to the sum of ,£268 6/10 were passed for payment. The foreman’s (Mr F. Chesterman), dealing with work carried out during the month was approved. The report stated that the reservoir has registered an average of 11 feet of water for the month.

ft. was resolved to request Mr J. Macfarlane to make a survey of the levels of the pipe line near the lake as soon as possible before proceeding -with laying the new pipes. The abattoirs manager (Mr J. Jarman), reported animals slaughtered for the month 13 cows, 13 heifers, 72 .bullocks, 108 sheep, 1 lamb, 17 pigs, 1.7 calves; condemned 3 cows, 1 sheep. Fees received £57 14/T; for same period last year £6l 17/6.
