REEFTON NOTES

(Our Own Correepondent.)

REEFTON, September 15. Private advice has been received of the death at Auckland of Colin Campbell Ballantyne, a former resident of Reef ton, and one who was a nephew of the late J. A. Montgomerie. Deceased arrived in Reefton about the middle eighties, and followed the occupation of an engineer, when he was associated with the Inkerman Battery plant. Later on he went into the sharebroking business and was associated with George M. Adams as Ballantyne and Adams. In 1887-88 they were responsible for the construction of what was afterwards Bourke’s Hotel, at the corner of Broadway and Smith Streets. He was afterwards connected with the dredging in and around the Inangahua Junction, and before leaving for Auckland was engineer to the United Alpine Co. in its palmy days of the early nineties. He removed to Auckland in 1896, where he has since continuously resided. He married May, second daughter of the late Chas. Mirfin, who survives him, and two daughters, Mrs Carter and Miss Maud Ballantyne, and Colin Ballantyne, a son. He was 68 years of age. The death occurred suddenly last night about 11.50 p.m. of Mrs Jas. Warren, wife of Mr Jas. Warren, licensee of the Exchange Hotel. Deceased retired in her usual health about 10 p.m., and her husband on retiring later, found her dead in bed. Deceased came here from Victoria some twelve years ago and is survived by her husband, four daughters and one son.

Word was received at Reefton on Friday of the death of Mr John Corbett, senior, who was for many years engaged as a baker at Reefton. He went to reside at Westport some twenty years ago. He is survived by two sons, John and Thomas, and one daughter, Mrs Peter Connelly.
