MOTORIST DROWNED

TRAGEDY NEAR KARAMEA

WESTPORT, Sept. 14. A fatal accident occurred on the Oparara Road, Karamea, at two-thirty this afternoon, a car driven by Charles Penrose plunging down the bank into Black’s Creek. George Smith, hotelkeeper, of Westport was drowned. Penrose had injuries to the head.

From what can be gathered, says to-day’s “Westport News,” Penrose, who had business to do for the General Motors, left for Karamea on Thursday, 'taking deceased with him as a companion on the trip. They left Oparaia on return yesterday afternoon, and crossed the Blackwater Creek bridge about half a mile from Market Cross. 'The car when leaving the bridge swerved and toppled over into the creek. who was driving, escaped, but Smith was imprisoned in the car. Penrose made several desperate efforts to save Smith, but was unable to do so, and hastened for assistance. When this was available, the 'body was recovered. Dr. Barrowclough and Constable Robinson made prolonged efforts at artificial restoration to "bring deceased round, but without avail.
