ATHLETICS

WEST COAST CENTRE. The West Coast Centre of the New Zealand Athletic, Cycling, and Axemen’s Union held its twenty-second annual meeting at Greymouth on Wednesday, the President, Mr G. E. Perkins (Greymouth) presiding over delegates from the Moana, Paroa, Kotuku, Kokiri, Brunnerton, and United Clubs. In presenting the balance-sheet, the President gave the following report on the last .season’s activities: — “There were 16 clubs affiliated, against 18 the previous year. New affiliations were United and Brunnerton Clubs, whilst those that dropped out were Westport Fire Brigade, Little Wanganui, Ngakawau, and Te Kuha. Six permits for small meetings Were issued, against eight the previous season. The registrations effected were 154 season (135), and 180 day permits (199), an increase of 19 in season and decrease of 19 in day registrations, the total being the same as the previous season. I attended most of the meetings, and found the sport fairly well conducted. . Several minor defects were brought under the notice of the various officials. The receipts for the year were £53/16/9, and the expenditure £54/5/9. The latter-included a donation of five guineas to the Watson fund and also a five-guinea medal to the N.Z. cycle championships, fees and goods to N.Z. Union £24/6/6. This leaves us with a credit balance of £lO4/11/4, with no liabilities, and a stock of 100 new rule books in hand. Weather conditions were again fairly favourable in the earlier part of the season. The meetings held during Easter all struck bad weather, but managed to carry out their programmes. During the year the N.Z. Union has had revised, consolidated and reprinted the rules with an index, which will be appreciated by all officials and competitors. We have a good stock of same, and they are now available at the small cost of 6d each. The only matter for consideration is the case of C. Smart, who competed at the Greymouth Jubilee meeting as a maiden when not eligible, and secured second prize of £l, he having won a race at Southbridge in 1926. It is your duty to deal with this case and , mete out what punishment you consider he deserves. In conclusion, I have to thank the various club secretaries and officials for their courtesy extended to me at all times, and trust' that their successful efforts in the interest of good, clean sport will be long continued for the benefit of the rising manhood of our district. Also to the press for their very full reports of the various meetings held during the year.” The annual report and balance-sheet was adopted. It was decided to disqualify O. ' Smart, of Christchurch, for 12 months, and place him on the forfeit list until the sum of £1 be refunded by him. It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mr K. Williams in his long illness, and to express the hope that he would be back to normal health and that his services would be available for the coming seasonThe election of officers resulted: — President, Mr G. E. Perkins; VicePresidents, Messrs K. Williams, N. Lawson, and G. Jack ; treasurer, Mr J. Pennent; committee, Messrs R. Fitzgerald, J. Butcher, J. Guy, J. J. Rooney (ind F. Williams. The following dates were allotted: Paroa, February 9 ; Brunner, February 16; Kokiri, March 9; Nelson Creek, March 16 ; Kotuku, March 30; Moana, Easter Saturday; Charleston, Easter Monday ; United, Easter Saturday; other clubs are to apply for their dates before the end of October. ; It was resolved that clubs must ini future apply for dates for their meetings at the annual meeting of the Centre, and if they do not do so, the date of the last season’s sports becomes vacant and automatically lapses. i
