NEWS AND NOTES.
(By Whalebone.)
When Polydectes arrived at Riccarton from the north much was expected of him, but he failed to live up to his reputation, and subsequently was given a spell. He again is a regular attendant at the Riccarton tracks and it is obvious that he is carrying more condition than previously. Polydectes is a very speedy horse when at his best, and if he strikes form he will win his shares of races in the spring. On a firm track lie is a good galloper, but he is seldom seen to advantage on a wet track.
Page Boy was nominated for the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting, but at present he is suffering from a cold, and will not fulfil his engagements at the southern meeting.
The Australian-bred gelding Chickwheat galloped in pleasing style before the commencement of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National carnival, and it was expected that he would go close to winning at least one stake at the meeting. But though he ran fair races, he did not quite live up to his best form. He looks none the worse for his recent racing, however, he might show to advantage at some of the minor spring meetings.
The Clarenceux gelding Sayonara was hunted recently with the Brackenfield Hunt, and he jumped well and pulled up quite sound. It has taken Sayonara some time to recover from the injury he suffered while he was schooling at Riccarton, but hopes are entertained that he will stand another preparation. It is likely that he will be sent to Riccarton at an early date for that purpose. Since he entered R. Ellis’s stable, Buoyant has made marked progress, and' if his forward running in the Selwyn Handicap, on the concluding day of the Grand National fixture, is any criterion he is quickly returning to form. He has built up a good deal lately, and his condition reflects credit on his trainer. In the 1926-27 season, Buoyant won seven races, and if he returns to that form he will be difficult to beat in handicap events at the minor spring meetings. Bicolor, who occupied a prominent position in the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup markets, has broken down, and will not fiulfil any of his spring engagements. Bicolor, who is a son of Magpie and the New Zealand-bred mare Charleville, thus ranking as a full-brother to Windbag, cost 1600 guineas as a yearling, but because of unsoundness ho did not prove a profitable purchase for his owners. According to a. report from the north, Commendation has again entered George Jones’s stable, at Awapuni. As a three-year-old Commendation proved himself the champion of his year, and among his chief successes were the Hawke’s Bay Guineas, New Zealand Derby Stakes, Great Northern Derby, New Zealand St. Leger Stakes (in which he created a fresh Australasian record tor a mile and threequarters), Great Northern St. Leger and Awapuni Gold Cup. He also deadheated for first place in the Avondale Guineas with Lysander. If Commendation reproduces his best form, as a live-year-old, he is likely to play a prominent. role in the important weight-for-age and handicap events in the Dominion this spring, and later he may be given another chance to earn distinction in the Commonwealth. Bronstell has shaped well in his preliminary lessons as a hurdler, having shown a lot of cleverness in the jumping ring. A. E‘. Wormaid contemplates trying him over the pony
hurdles very soon, and he is hopeful that the Kilbrony gelding will make a useful hurdler. Maunga has returned to Hastings but the report saying that he will not race again is without foundation. The unlucky gelding is to be turned out for a spell, and his half-brother, by, King Soult, will take his place in J. Griffith’s stable. Patuki, has broken down and it is stated that he may not race again. Reports from Hastings state that he was in a bad way last week. Though Lochson will be a starter in the open sprint at the coming Taranaki Hunt Chib meeting it is unlikely that he will be seen in action at the Marton or Wanganui meetings, as his owner is desirous of giving him a chance of earning distinction over the big country later on. WITH THE TROTTERS. The speedy gelding Audience gives every promise of coming right. He is giving up his fighting tactics, and is staying on better than he did. Audience is by Great Audubon from Myrtlewood. G. F. Robinson is keeping the pacer Peter Daunt in regular work, with a view to picking up a race with the gelding at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s gathering. Peter Daunt is a speedy little chap, and now that he is a year older he may stay well over a mile and a-half. The Canterbury-bred pacer Amaris has done well during his holiday from the training tracks. He got into a big mix-up in the St. Heliers Handicap at Alexandra Park on the opening day
of the Auckland Trotting Club’s
Christchurch meeting. He is not showing any ill-effects of the tumble, and appears to be quite himself. During the autumn he was subjected to an operation which has proved to be successful. Amaris will be got ready for summer racing. The American trotter Maxegin is entered for the big race at New Brighton. He is a reliable trotter, and is not easily upset. His appearance at the seaside will add interest to the
contest. Matagouri evidently has made up his mind that Addington disagrees with him, and unless he goes right-handed he mis-fires in his gait. On a bigger course there is little doubt that he will be able to maintain his balance. Hence his withdrawal from races at the August meeting, and his entry for New Brighton. New Brighton owner Mr G. W. Dransfield has converted Myrtle Dillon to the trotting gait. Myrtle Dillon is by Author Dillon from Mrytlewood, the dam of Loganwood. She made her debut as a pacer, but later displayed a liking for the trotting gait, and, all going well in the meantime, she will step out among the trotters at New Brighton. A filly boasting of aristocratic parentage is the youngster by Worthy Bond, 2.111, from Logan Queen, 2.13. Logan Queen is by Logan Pointer from the American mare Queen Patch by Thistle, 2.131. Queen Patch was imported from the United States by Messrs F. and J. Barlow, of Christchurch. It was to be expected that the filly would be above the average, and she is. She has everything about her that goes to make a real racehorse, and she can go faster than many horses that have been in work for years. Last season’s cup winner, Kohara, raced very badly at the Addington meeting. There was some excuse for him in the National Cup, as he met with trouble going out of the straight the last time and got the wheel of his sulky buckled. Kohara, who is now trained by J. Bullock, at Hawera, for Mr J. R. Corrigan, did not look as well as when he won the big race last November. It looks as though Loganwood is not on the improve. His racing at the recent meeting was not impressive and the best has probably been seen of the pacer.
