A pleasant afternoon was spent on the staff tennis courts last Saturday afternoon, when members of the club gathered to farewell Mrs Mayhew, who has been an active member since its formation. During the afternoon tea adjournment Mr T. R. Hogg (club captain) spoke of the active part taken by Mrs Mayhew, and hoped that the change would be beneficial to her health. On behalf of members and friends he tendered iihe guest a solid silver afternoon tea service. Mr H. A. Ord (secretary) endorsed Mr Hogg’s remarks. Mr S. Mayhew, on behalf of his wife, suitably responded. After cheers for Mrs Mayhew and the singing of ‘‘Auld Lang Syne,” an enjoyable afternoon terminated. On Saturday afternoon a large number fathered at the Mine Storeroom to bid farewell to Mr S. Mayhew, who has been engineer to the Blackwater Mines Ltd. for the past thirteen years. Mr J. A. McEwin, (battery superintendent) presided over the fathering. Arrangements were in the hands of Air H. A. Ord. The Chairman,, in proposing the health of the departing guest, referred to the capable manner in which Mr Mayhew had discharged his duties, being at all times courteous and obliging. He trusted that Mr Mayhew would be as successful in Ins new position as he had been in the past. He presented the guest with a solid leather bag as a token of the esteem in which he was held by the employees and staff of the mine. MrMayhew, on rising to respond, was greeted with’ applause. He thanked the Chainnan for his kind remarks, and the gathering for their token of esteem. He stated that he was grateful for the loyal co-operation of others at all times in the past. He regretted leaving Waiuta, where he» had made many friends, but he hoped to return from time to time. Other toasts honoured were: ‘‘The Surface Hands,” proposed by Mr Rodden, responded to by Messrs S. Morrison and J. Green; “The Battery Hands,” proposed by Mr T. R. Hogg, responded to by Messrs F. Sanderson and J. E. Allen; “The Press,” proposed by Mr Ord and responded to by Mr Rodden, lhe Chairman proposed the health of Mrs Mayhew ; and the toast of “The Chairman” (proposed by Mr Allen) followed by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne,’ terminated a very pleasant afternoon. In the early hours of Thursday morning a violent storm of wind and rain arose, the gusts shaking the houses with their intensity. In the morning 60 points of rain were registered for two days. A special grant of £6 has been made by the Nelson Education Board to the Waiuta School Committee to help pay the high cost of firing. . After the pictures on Saturday evening a farewell social was tendered to Mr J. Watson in a well-filled hall. Commencing mining in 1896 Mr Watson is one of the decreasing band of old miners. He was presented with a wallet by Mr M. Kennedy. Miss R Woollhouse supplied the music and Mr F. Thorne was M.C. A dainty supper was partaken of, and a pleasant'evening brought to a close by the singing of Auld Lang Syne. Waiuta Seniors defeated Reefton at Reefton last week-end by 19 to 8. Waiuta Juniors v. Rover Juniors provided a good game. Half-time scores were 5 to nil in favour of the latter, but in the second half the former completely outclassed them, winning by 21 to 5.
