MAYOR OF HENLEY
JOB AS CADDY-MASTER
LONDON, July 8
Councillor F. Butler, Henley’s onelegged caddymaster Mayor, who received Prince George at the regatta yesterday, is one of the most original figures in municipal life. Young, jov-ial-faced, he works fourteen hours a day. , , “My job at the golf club is to look after the caddies,” he said yesterday, “and my position as Mayor might be rather embarassing if our members were not exceedingly nice men. But they stroll up and say, ‘Two caddies, your worship,’ and I am perfectly at iwme.
“In the mornings I have appointments, then I am at the club, and at night, there is meeting after meeting. Although I lost a leg at Ypres in December, 1915, I still play quite a good gaifie of golf, and can drive further than the majority of players. “I have started an Advancement Association to boom Henley. _ We want to popularise Henley as an inland holiday resort. It is the centre of the Chilterns and the Thames Valley, and one of the most beautiful places in the kingdom. “And I may say that at Henley we have some of the prettiest girls in the world. It is the town where you will find a record number of smiles, and it is a highly romantic place, too. During the regatta I rather fancy a lot of little romances and engagements usually take place.”
