RUNANGA NOTES

At the meeting of the Runanga Borough Council there were present: The Mayor (Mr R. McTaggart), Crs. Boddy, Duggan, Connel, Southward, Armstrong and Malone. Accounts amounting to £25/3/1 were passed for payment. . The Runanga Co-operative Society wrote requesting the Council to find, a suitable rubbish dump, also bringing under its notice the expense incurred. by the heavy traffic lorries on the approach to to Co.-op. store. It was resolved-that the Society be advised the Council had arranged for all rubbish to be dumped at Nine Mile, over the hillside, the dumps being adjacent to the gravel pit. It was resolved that the Mayor and DeputyMayor meet the Co-operative Society Committee, and go into the matter of making the frontage of the store safe for traffic.

“Thirds” amounting to £2/3/8 were credited to the Borough account. The Land Board advised having sent a communication to E. Noble to take steps to clear his section of noxious weeds. E. Flood wrote cancelling a tender for M.R. Sec. 3, Blk X, Runanga. It was resolved that the Works Committee interview Mr. Higgins (Grey County Engineer) regarding the loan of the county grader for the main highway any time the county authorities had it in this district. The monthly report from the Health Inspector was received as satisfactory. The Director of the Greymouth Technical High School wrote regarding nominating members to represent local authorities on the Board. The Council decided not to nominate anyone. The Southern Union Insurance Co., wrote re the lorry insurance now due. The Council was of the opinion a fire cover (of £75, was far too low, as a month ago the engine had been repaired extensively, parts replaced, and a new body supplied increasing its value. It was considered the cover should be £l2O at least, and decided to advise the agent to that effect. Mr. F. Duggan wrote in reference to a drain from Hart’s property.—lt was resolved that the Works Committee meet and view

the nuisance, with power to act. An application from J. Machejifeschi for a permit to build a garage on road reserve was . received. The Mayor pointed out that the Council had no power to grant such a permit. The reports of the Council’s Power Board, Technical School Board and Hospital Board representatives, and of the roadman, were all received as satisfactory. It was reported regarding a deputation to the State Miners’ Union Committee in reference to a parkingplace for cars on McGowan Street side of the Miners’ Hall, that the Union would be prepared to supply material to the value of £3O for this work, provided the Council accepted the responsibility for future repair, etc. —It was resolved that the offer be accepted and to advise the Union that the Council would be responsible for all future upkeep. It was reported that the General Domain Grant had been expended to the amount of £73/ 4/4 with 100 loads of soil still to be carted. Messrs Baty Bros, were agreeable to spread, grade, roll and sow grass seed on same for an amount not exceeding £l2. The offer was accepted.

The Afayor moved that a letter of protest be sent to the AVestland Land Board, Lands Department, Town Planning Board, and Mr. H. E. Holland, M.P., with reference to leasing sections at Rapahoe to persons who intended erecting “shacks” of any description on same. That locality, he urged, should have been made a scenic reserve, but as it had not been, it was up to the heads of the various departments to see that decent residences were erected. It was also decided to ask the support of the Grey County' and Grey Borough Councils, and the Cobden Town Board.

It was resolved that the Automobile Association, the Grey County, and Mines Department he asked to help to cover over the rubbish dump at. the Seven Mile near the entrance to the James Mine. It was reported that Mr. O’Flynn had been asked to cut down blackberries, etc., on the section on which, the Borough Office is built, in order to put. sheep thereon. It was found Air. W. H. Southward had been using the section. It was stated to be hardly conceivable that any person could use an occupied section in such a manner and resolved that Mr. W. H. Southward be asked to remove all rubbish off the section and refrain from making it a convenience, the gate from his, property and borough section to be removed, and the above to be carried out within 14 days, or 'otherwise the Borough Solicitor would deal with the matter. It was resolved that Airs. Syme be advised that after March 1929, she must do away with Pfes.
