COBDEN STATE SCHOOL

Diamond Jubilee Celebrations

IXTY YEARS AGO, a handful of children took their seals in a little one-roomed building al Cobden, and the Stale School came z-xV into being. Pupils and teachers came, and went, but the little school, and its masters, continued their valuable work in the cause of education. Generation succeeded generation, and the pupils who were scattered over many parts of the world were followed by others. Time worked its changes on the township, as well as on its inhabitants, and Cobden progressed steadily. More families settled there, more children answered the call of the school bell, and the one-roomed building became inadequate. Its size was increased many times as the years passed, new buildings were erected in wood, but they, in their turn, outlived their usefulness. To-day, education is imparted to the children at Cobden in a splendid brick structure, equal to any school of its size in the Dominion. Sixty years ago, the Stale School was founded. To-morrow, the celebration of its Diamond Jubilee will commence. Time is a potent factor in erasing many things from human minds, but it is seldom that a boy or a girl forgets his or her scnooldays. or the old school. The invitation to attend the Diamond Jubilee has been broadcasted to ex-pupils throughout New Zealand, and beyond, and, where circumstances permitted them to do so, the erstwhile scholars have responded, many of them making special efforts to attend the Jubilee. The celebrations which commence to-morrow will continue for three days, but the event will remain in the memory of all those who arc present, for a much longer period. Jubilee Programme - Sunday, 12th: 11 a.m. Ex-Pupils’ Church Parade, Church of the Resurrection, Cobden. Vicar: Rev. W. Bell. 7 p.m. Combined Thanksgiving Service, McKane’s Hall.
