BACKING BILLS

LEADS TO BANKRUPTCY

(Special to “Star.”)

AUCKLAND, August 10

Austen Joseph Whitaker, aged 78, in business as a land agent at Auckland met his creditors' to-day. The deficiency was £425. Included in the assets was a stamp collection described as of indefinite value.

The petitioning creditor was the Wanganui Aerated Water Co. Ltd. Having been approached to find a purchaser for McCarthy’s Hotel. Wanganui, he put the proposition to one Baxter and his wife, and went to Wanganui to complete the deal. “When I was in the solicitor’s,” said Whitaker, “it turned out that Baxter would have to give two promissory notes in favour of one McGuire. I was asked if I would back these notes, and most foolishly did so, receiving no benefit from any party.” The assignee stated that the discharge would be facilitated at the end of the customary two months.
