RUGBY FOOTBALL

RUGBY REP. GAME".

The Southland Rushy representative team arrived by the express yesterday afternoon, and were met at the station by Rugby Union officials. The men were the guests of the Star Football Club at their annual ball last night, when they were officially welcomed by the Mayor (Mr J. W. Greenslade) on behalf of the Greymouth citizens, and Mr N. W. Jones, for the Rugby Union and the Star Club. Mr Rice, manager of the party, suitably replied, and mentioned that his men were the cream of Southland’s Rugby players, and would give the Coast men a hard go for honours on Saturday. Seen in action to-day at practice, on the Park, the Southerners certainly look a promising combination, and Coast will have to play at top form to hold them back. It is to be hoped that weather conditions hold good. The personnel of the Southland team is as follow: —Backs: J. Dempster, A. Walker, F. Townsend, E. Ottrey (captain), B. Richardson, U. Crosbie, J. Muir, A. Lee, P. Laing, A. Barnett; forwards: C. Mills, G. Greer, M. McCoy, J. Shrimpton, E. Ashby, B. Scott, I. Galt, W. Horner, G. Purdue, G. Fleming and E. Hamer. COAST CHANGES. TARANAKI V. MARLBORO’. HAWERA, August 9. The touring Marlborough fifteen made a fine stand against a reputedly stronger Taranaki combination this (afternoon, the visitors having to accept defeat by a margin of only five points. Taranaki compiled 22 points from five tries (two converted) and a penalty goal, to Marlborough’s 17 from three tries (one converted), and two ■penalty goals. Marlborough fielded a bustling vanguard, which, led by W. Satherly, G. Washington, and L. Devine, proved superior to Taranaki in the tight play, owing to an inclination by the home side to spread, though the packed scrums gave Taranaki a greater share of the ball. In the loose, the Taranaki forwards (who included three North Island nominees in A. Kivell, J. Walter and J. Baldwin), held a slight advantage. The back play showed decidedly in favour of Taranaki, with D. Johnston (second five-eighth) as the pivot. Johnston, who is another North Island nominee, was the star back on the ground. He registered the most thrilling try of the game, besides ,playing a prominent part in some ethers and he showed great resource in defence. J., McDonald, at centre, was Marlborough’s most useful player and ranked next to Johnston as a back.

Taranaki scored in the first minute the half-back Riley, sending Owen Johnston in. The move was capped with an unconverted try by Hohaia. Marlborough forwards replied with a massed attack, Gill, Devine, and Washlington going through for a. score by Washington, which Hodson converted. Another move by Taranaki’s rear division left the ball with the forwards, who returned to H. W. Brown, who sent Fookes across. Collins failed to convert, but shortly after registered three points with a penalty, the ball striking the bar and bounding over. A dash by Hodson took action to Taranaki’s line, and from a mix jup, Satherly bored his way through for an unconverted try. Before halftime Riley and Owen Johnston were associated in a spectacular Taranaki attack, culminating in a try by Brown, which Collins converted, and from the line_ out, Guy charged over, making the half-time score: Taranaki 17; Marlborough 8.

i During the second spell, Taranaki (forwards packed to better advantage, ’but were still beaten in the tight play. Bids by the rearguards in sparkling iplay broke repeatedly on McDonald, Crump and Hodson, who shone in Marlborough’s defence. Taranaki's 'only success in this spell was a sensational effort by Johnston, who swerved through in a 30 yards’ run to score by the posts, and Collins converted. Two penalty goals by WashKington augmented Marlborough’s tally, while in a melee close to the objective, Washington fought his way to let Satherly score again, no side sounding with the scores: Taranaki 22; Marlborough 17. WAITAKI v. TIMARU. OAMARU, August 9. Waitaki and Timaru Boys’ High Schools’ annual fixture was played this afternoon before a large attendance, a. hard and exciting game ending in Waitaki’s favour by 13 to G. The second fifteens’ game was drawn, six all.
